The OL was better than I thought

Don't get me wrong. They were below league average for most of the game, but I saw some encouraging things.
  1. I decided to re-watch the game focusing on the OL because several of the talking heads were saying that Christian Haynes struggled. I thought he played fairly well given he's a rookie making his first start. He certainly wasn't worse than Anthony Bradford. He needs to get stronger and he made some mistakes, but all things considered, I would give him a passing C- grade.
  2. There were more breakdowns on the left side of the line than the right. Laken Tomlinson in particular had a tough day. In addition, Charles Cross needs to join Christian Haynes in the weight room.
  3. The tight ends on this team couldn't block my 90 year old mother-in-law.
  4. Give credit where credit is due, Budda Baker was a problem all game long and a big reason the offense struggled for most of the game.
  5. Now what I found encouraging. The OL was better in the second half and played even better in the fourth quarter during the Hawks' last drive that used up most of the clock. Maybe something to build on.

I'm not saying our O-line is perfect, but what I am saying is I don't think it's a x's and o thing or a talent thing. Olu, Abe, Charles are good O-linemen. That's 3 out of the 5 O-linemen that are good players. I wasn't a fan of the Grubb hire or the O-line coach. IMO our O-line needs better coaching with an experienced O-line coach.

I know a lot of fans will say that it's not a need, but damn, imagine Budda on our defense. He's a free agent at year's end. Pipe dream though; no way the Cards let him get away.

oh god, that would be sick. He's such a baller. And I think he's universally respected around the league.

Just a clarification here. You say it was his first start and that’s not true, Bradford started and got hurt. Also Haynes started the season rotating with Bradford but after awhile they decided it wasn’t working and gave Bradford the role FT.

Looks like Haynes will be the starter this week though. Having Lucas next to him should help immensely

Outside of a couple of missed assignments they played decently yesterday. They have the past two weeks. Defense is trending way up and the line is playing better. A lot of our offensive struggles have been put on the defense and the line so we will see how that unfolds moving forward

Count me as one of the fans who was LIVID that we passed him up on draft day. I was near screaming at my TV…”PICK BUDDA!!!” Not only a local cat but I knew he was going to be a force.

Still salty about it.

I thought the o-line took a step back from the prev. week against SF. They didn't look as physical to me at all as they did against SF. In pass-blocking they were about as ok as they were against SF, minus Haynes, but they couldn't get any push in the run game for shit.

I think having Haynes next to him kind of dragged Lucas down a level with him tbh. I think a good RG next to Abe could make running to the right side a pretty big strength in the future.

I agree with Budda being the biggest problem early and I feel that has more to do with Geno not adjusting protections or getting the ball out early when there's a free rusher.

I think X's and O's plays a good part, Brock Huard and some other former players chimed in on this. Need more play calls that help the oline. They never move the pocket or use designed rollouts. Lately they've started running more and snapping under center, but the amount of pass plays under shotgun just makes it too easy for opposing defenses to tee off

I'd say thats also probably a big reason for Geno's many interceptions, lots of teams are just simply rushing four and dropping 7 into coverage which makes passing difficult especially with how bad the line is.

It's also his bad decisions; it's not just the O Line. Plenty of those have nothing to do with the O Line. The O Line didn't decide to pass up a first down and just throw it right to the defender in the end zone, again.
Never mind, not going down this road again :D:ROFLMAO:

"Laumea to get an opportunity

Macdonald said rookie offensive lineman Sataoa Laumea will get a chance to compete with fellow rookie Christian Haynes to fill in at right guard for injured starter Anthony Bradford.

Laumea, a sixth-round draft pick out of Utah, has been a healthy inactive for all 11 of the team’s game this season. Haynes, a third-rounder out of Connecticut, has logged 164 snaps at right guard and was previously in a timeshare with Bradford at the position. He played all 60 offensive snaps Sunday after Bradford suffered an ankle injury in the first quarter.

Bradford is expected to miss at least one game."

K9 had 16 forced missed tackles while rushing for 41 yards.... this o-line is special.
