Wilson's sack from Charles Godfrey came on a blitz

At the end of the 2nd quarter on that sack of Wilson for a 13-yard loss, the Panthers got it from safety Charles Godfrey on a blitz from seven yards out. That's been a theme against Seattle since late last year. It left all Wilson's targets in one-on-one coverage, and Robert Turbin looks like he could have been had for a quick five and maybe the first, but Wilson didn't pull the trigger.

It may have happened too fast for him or the outlet not been visible enough for him (which aren't on the O-line), he may just have decided to scramble (which isn't on the O-line), or there may not have been any blitz-beaters built into the play, which still isn't on the O-line, since an OC had better install blitz-beaters into a four-wide look with no RB protection. I can't say for this play in particular, but a general shortage of outlet routes has struck me ever since Bevell started calling plays here.

But either way, on one of the most crucial instances of pressure on Wilson today, it's hard to blame the O-line. This is an offense that hasn't yet learned to beat the blitz, the point of which is to OUTNUMBER the O-line and force the offense into alternative protections. And Seattle's opponents know that they haven't yet learned to beat the blitz, especially of the secondary variety. One has to look at the source of the pressure to judge whether the line is or isn't handling it well.

Just food for thought for those who tend to blame the O-line for everything and the depletion of the ozone layer.

I agree to an extent that the O-line cannot hold all of the blame on that particular play/sack, Wilson was indecisive at times for sure today. However while we're talking about the O-Line, how did they do in the run game today, not very impressive for a team that wants to establish the run and unleash the beast.

For the economy, I blame the government, for the Ozone, Precession, for the underwhelming run game, I'll just say that the O-line was not impressive today.

If we're going to beat SF next week, I think both the O-line and D-line need to play much better.

Home cooking will cure a lot of our line worries.

It's usually on the QB to beat the secondary blitz. Go ahead and bring one of your DB's against Peyton Manning and see what that does for you.

If it's the same play I'm thinking, he came straight at Wilson. Wilson should've seen it coming.

The other annoying thing Wilson did this game was instead of scrambling to the edges, he kept turning back inside and dropping deeper and deeper. Almost reminded me of TJack 2 years ago.

I think Russ will watch the tape and correct it.

What's funny to me is that I don't hold anything that we saw today against the Seahawks when we are at home. Unless you've been living under a rock for the better part of the last 10 years, the Seahawks are a remarkably better team at home than they are on the road. I don't think any incarnation will change that paradigm.

The 49ers were impressive at home. They beat a Packers team that was pretty damn good in their house. A great game by two top NFC teams.

Still, when the 49ers come to Century Link next Sunday night, all bets are off. I will bet one of my finest RC planes that we win that game and win it convincingly. That's not because we are that much better of a team than the 49ers, but we are very much that much better of a team than the 49ers AT HOME.

THAT is the worry for me today, yes, since it's been this line's saving grace for the past year. However, the combined context of awesome Carolina D-line, Week 1, and 10am road game mitigates this somewhat for me. Let's see about next week.

Wilson had his rookie game, today. At least mentally.

In all honesty, on this particular play, I thought it was just an extremely well timed/executed blitz. Didn't think he had a whole lot he could have done.

He did have a bunch of poor decisions, but fortunately he doesn't tend to make catastrophic ones. Additionally, with RWs play style big sacks are going to happen, but so are big plays. It's a necessary evil IMO, even if at that moment it gives you a heart palpitation. Not to mention, I thought CAR DL might end up being the toughest performance we face this year. Not saying they are the best, but the stars aligned quite a bit in this game.

Just reviewed this play several times, while Wilson was indecisive and held the ball too long, Sweezy completely vacated the gap the rusher crashed through to slam the door on Wilson. I don't blame Wilson taking an extra second or two going through his progressions on this play compared to the lack of savvy by Sweezy.

When you watch this play again specifically watch what happens to Sweezy. After watching this play again, I don't know how anyone could put this on Wilson. If Sweezy even slightly chips that rusher, Wilson has time to get the ball out.

The good thing is Sweezy, Wilson, Cable, and the O-Line will correct this stuff.

He was taking care of his assignment. He didn't just spot a squirrel and wander off. Again, that blitzer came on a delay.

Makes sense to send a safety at the faster QB's. We should give ET a few chances to go after Kaep.

RW doesn't throw many picks, he gets out of situations where you think he will get sacked but it comes with taking a few sacks you wish he didn't. Part of RWs game and I am ok with considering his total turnovers and there was one today. It happens, will happen less and less and get better.

Still good point OP and I am sure RW will start to consistently recognize it sooner and take the five yarder. In the other hand at times he will get sacked no matter what
