Why the Lack of a Pass Rush?

What made the LOB great was a solid pass rush. When under pressure QB's throw picks, make bad decisions and have less time to pick apart the secondary.

So with our two pick ups this year, known for their pass rush abilities, why no pass rush this year? Is it our DC? Lack of talent, talent not performing up to expectations? What is wrong?

Probably a combination of things. Clowney is probably just now starting to pick up the defense. He was acquired right before the season opener so had no time in the system or time to acclimate to the players around him as well as learn the defense. Ansah was coming off injury during OTAs and also had little to no practice time during TC. He also missed the first couple games and is just now getting into game shape. Jaran Reed has missed every game so far. Really the only starting d lineman that had OTAs and TC is Poona Ford.
So I would say lack of preparation and lack of continuity and cohesion among the d line players has played a huge part in the lack of a pass rush. A good pass rush helps the DBs and good DBs help a good pass rush. With Reed coming back and Ansah and Clowney getting more time together, the pass rush should improve and really has no where to go but up in terms of getting to the QB.

I have no idea..well I have an idea but I don't know for sure. It's driving me batshit crazy though!
I couldn't even enjoy the game today like I usually do, I had myself prepared for heartbreak with EACH Browns snap of the ball. I want to see Norton get asked about this shit.

I rewatched the game and a couple things stand out.

A) Clowney forced another hold. He ran right past their RT and got tackled from behind. Would have been a sack. This was on the play Baker threw to a receiver on the sideline in front of Shaq but it got called back for a hold.

B) Our guys don't quite rush together as a unit. There were plays where ansah and Clowney beat the tackle and then the QB steps up. Having a pocket pusher like Jarran Reed will truly make a big difference IMO

If they run

I also don't think I've once seen a coverage sack this season so there's that

I've always wondered if the defensive scheme and the way teams attack causes this. In 2013, we had a very good secondary and teams still hadn't figured out how to really beat the scheme.

Playing to not get beat deep, while teams dink and dunk short passes, probably makes it way harder for the dline to get home. Also seems like teams have routes that easily find soft spots in the zones which makes it easy on them when coverages aren't mixed up or we run linebackers on receivers. QBs can pull the trigger faster and not be hesitant

Did we even have a near-sack today? Impressive that we won the turnover battle so resoundingly, although some of that was unforced. Hopefully getting Reed back will help; they couldn't be much worse than they were today.

I think this is a big part of it, quarterbacks know thats what we give up and they get the ball out quick. Seems like we haven't seen a ton of 3rd and longs either, few more negative plays on first down, little tighter coverage, and Reed coming back will help.

Clowney had Baker dead to rights and their RT #74 tackled him from behind. They called a hold.

Officially we didn't have a single hit on Baker. There was one where they hit him but the refs called RTP

In my view this concern is still overblown and the result of people making too much out of fluky stats. Opposing QBs aren't sitting in the pocket peacefully making third and fourth reads against us. They are getting the ball out fast and sometimes inaccurately as a result. Baker today was on the move most of the game and a few of those INTs were affected by hasty throws that trailed the receiver.

I have a sneaking suspicion our pass rush is about to get a lot better... :irishdrinkers: :179417:

I looked all over the internet and found the answer.

Lack of good pass rushers.

I've noticed they tend to wash each other out at times, often piling 2-3 guys together in the same lane. O-line easily pushes them into each other and it leaves only 1 or 2 guys chasing the QB. Even when Norton sends blitzes they don't seem to get home. Interior pressure is a big issue so getting Reed back will help. I think Clowney and Ansah should get it going soon on the edges, Clowney has been real close this year to multiple sacks.

The amount of holding opposing teams are getting away with is appalling.

If you are looking for holding as an excuse you need to stop. Every lame fan whines about holding on the OL. Our team holds as much as any other team. It's generally allowed unless you use the hold to pull or turn the DL. But if you grab on and direct, they won't call it.

If uncalled holding was really a big problem the DL would all be making the flag signal after every play like WR do when they are interfered with.

No doubt about it. They legalized holding and when they tried to curb it by calling it the fan based, announcers and Tom Brady screamed about it.

I'll post this here as well .......................................

Snap counts for Quinton Jefferson (60) and Pooda Ford (58) and All Woods (44) stand out among defensive linemen. Apparently, they chose to keep a lot of power on the field verses the Browns.

Some might surmise the coaching staff had more respect for what Chubb could do than fear of Mayfield.

Yes!

THis!

I have been noticing that for a few years now. The other teams o-line gives ground and then collapses all of our pass rushers together into a big pile where they are running into each other. I often wonder why we can't pull off the same thing.
