You could bring in Steve young , Troy Aikman, or Joe Montana in their prime and it wouldn't matter behind this OLine. Unless you bring in someone special like Jackson, or Allen it won't make a bit of difference. We need to continue to beef up the trenches, bring in a young guy to sit behind Geno for a season.

(If I were a GM, I'd be asking prospective QBs: do you REALLY think you're better than Patrick Mahomes? Then why should we pay you more than he makes?)

Unfortunately, the answer to your last question is, because if you don't, someone else will.

I'm wondering if we're going to start seeing a bit of a change in the QB pay scale. If I'm right about this, there won't be quite the dollar market for QB's like Geno, Purdy, RW, Derek Carr, Justin Fields....Sam Darnold may be the exception, but will even he command as much as people think he will? We'll see. Could go either way.

There were some hefty contracts paid out to QB's in recent years that were regrettable, or in danger of becoming so, Watson, Cousins, RW, Rodgers, Tua, Jones, possibly even Dak and Lawrence. At some point, I'm guessing, teams are going to start saying you're not Mahomes, Burrow, Jackson, or Allen, not even close to them. I've been surprised that people think that Geno's got some kind of real bargaining power with the Hawks.

I don't know. We'll see...

Please, there are several QB's, including Burrow performing behind worse offensive lines. Drake Maye is also performing behind a worse rated offensive line.

More power to 'em. No QB not named Mahomes has won the super bowl while using more than 13% of the cap. Here are the top #s:
2023: Patrick Mahomes: 17%
2024: Patrick Mahomes: 16.9%
2021: Tom Brady (TB): 12.61%
2018: Tom Brady (NE): 12.42%
2015: Peyton Manning (DEN): 12.21%
2011: Eli Manning (NYG): 11.71%
2014: Tom Brady (NE): 11.13%
2007: Eli Manning (NYG): 10.75%

Now compare that to the top QB contracts (by cap %). The asterisk indicates a QB who has clinched a playoff spot this year - I'm including the Rams there.
Burrow and Cousins (although he isn't playing) still have a possibility of a playoff berth.
QB Team Per Year Avg. % of Salary Cap
Joe Burrow Bengals $55M 24.5
Trevor Lawrence Jaguars $55M 21.5
*Jared Goff Lions $53M 20.8
*Justin Herbert Chargers $52.5M 23.4
*Lamar Jackson Ravens $52M 23.1
*Jalen Hurts Eagles $51M 22.7
Kyler Murray Cardinals $46.1M 22.1
Deshaun Watson Browns $46M 22.1
Kirk Cousins Falcons $45M 17.6
*Patrick Mahomes Chiefs $45M 22.7
*Josh Allen Bills $43M 23.6
*Matthew Stafford Rams $40M 19.2
Dak Prescott Cowboys $40M 21.9
Daniel Jones Giants $40M 17.8
Aaron Rodgers Jets $37.5M 16.7

If history holds true, either the Chiefs threepeat, or the Vikings, Packers, Texans or Stealers win it. I'd love to revisit this after the Bowl. :)

Last year it was three first-round QBs and the biggest seventh-round outlier in NFL history. Mahomes, Lamar, and Goff are still seen as franchise QBs. I'd argue Purdy has mostly played like one, but there's a lot of debate on him.
Purdy would have been a first rounder if people knew he was gonna play like he has. I wonder how many young quarterbacks would excel in his position

If this was madden or my fantasy team I go for Burrow all day. Unfortunately there’s no way we get either one

Right... so what you're saying is we shouldn't address our sh*tty line and hope whoever we bring in can flourish with constant pressure in his face. Not to mention keep having our backs run into brick walls. That your strategy? Sounds pretty solid. 👌

QB is the easy target for literally all fanbases, we aren't immune to that.

And, frankly, a lot of the Geno discussion here is residual 'Pete vs. Russ' arguments that have just transformed since both Pete and Russ are gone.

But, as you noted, the truth is that the system around a QB is usually more important than the QB himself. The Seahawks don't have a system around their QB. Only one winning team in the league relies on their QBs arm more for offense than the Seahawks do. (If you're wondering who, it's the Vikings, who have a very good pass blocking offensive line but is more like 'ok' at run blocking.)

We have no running game, a poor offensive line, and an offensive coordinator who doesn't have anything resembling a coherent gameplan. You sure as crap aren't going to fix that with Trevor Lawrence of all people, but 'superstar QB' feels like the easy fix, so here we are.
I think you hit the nail on the head there. There's no logical reason to hate your team's QB from the beginning unless you resent how he got there. It had to sting when they chose Pete and Russ flamed out. Now that they're both gone, Geno and JS are the only remnants of that losing battle.

JS needs to be on the phone with the Vikings. They're not gonna' just keep Darnold AND JJ Mccarthy, imo. Go grab one of them if you can.

JJ, fine -- do not pay Darnold. This year is a farce. He will cost more than Geno and end up with the same results.

Is there any way we could land either of these cats in a trade? I am so done with Geno. I cannot stomach thought of seeing him even one more year in Seattle. There are no quarterbacks in this draft (at least not where we're picking). Cincy is probably going to lose more players and are notoriously cheap. Do they try to start over with a boatload of picks? Burrow has got to want out of there. Lawrence would be a nice consolation prize. Another dumpster fire organization wasting a talented QB. John (assuming he is still around) needs to swing for the fences with the quarterback position. Otherwise, we will remain in purgatory.
If you're thinking that Trevor Lawrence could be the answer, I'm glad you're not in the GM position.

I don't even buy that Lawrence could squeeze out one more win or two. Statistically, Geno has been the (slightly) better QB during his time as a starter. Jacksonville had a better defense than us in both 2022 and 2023, but our records were identical.

This year, Trevor Lawrence had a defense roughly equivalent to our defense last year. We were a .5 game out of the playoffs last year. The Jags season has been over since November.

I'm struggling to fathom what people who would love to see us get Trevor Lawrence would have said if Geno had managed to get us only 4 wins last year.

I was being generous about it but I do think Lawrence can do a little more things that Geno can not do. Still, as someone pointed out Geno Smith is the fraction of the cost of Lawrence. So in terms of cap value Geno still edges out Lawrence.

So yeah cap value is important to take into consideration when talking about the future QB position for the Seahawks. How much money do the Seahawks want to sink into the position?

I have argued for a while now that drafting a first round QB on a rookie five year deal is the way to go as it also further augments the team building that is currently going on with the roster.
