Ware, Johnson & Hill are OUT

Wilson will just have to rush for more TDs this week which I'm fine with fantasy wise.

I remember hearing about Carolinas offensive line woes and thinking "we are going to eat their lunch." Instead they ran the ball down our throat. I can t think of a better time to focus on the running game.
yes remember last year first game vs Az - everyone thought we'd mop their weak ass oline - and they were bad. Not worried - we'll be fine.

So, I checked my Madden Ratings. Unger was rated really high, 92.
Lemuel Jeanpierre? Rated at double zero. Corpse rating. Evidently he is a sack of bones. I bet he lines up facing the wrong way or something.

We are so boned.
LOLZ, that with your avatar makes for one freaking funny post Scotte.

Let me say for the record here, I think we're going to win. And I picked this as a loss before the season started. But Houston's offense is just that bad. Losing three fifths the oline, however, is reason for concern and I think it's going to be an ugly win. I'll be surprised if we can run the ball effectively and I'll be crossing my fingers that Wilson doesn't get injured on a sack. But as long as Wilson doesn't throw picks, Houston will have an even harder time scoring that we will.

I knew what you were saying Sarc. I am throwing stones. I think most of the line criticism fails to factor in the; QB, HC and play-calling.

You want to know the easiest way to make the pass protection appear better? Get a taller QB, who throw WCO style routes. Thatd make it look improved overnight. So, yeah, I think its whining. Its whining about a reality that will never manifest with Wilson at QB. He needs deeper drops. Pete likes big plays. Yap, yap, yap. But, at least IMO, its worth it with Wilson.

There's a point about holding the ball and the style of plays being called.

Agh, my intent here was to mitigate that point by saying hey look at the Bears, they have Cutler stand there all day and throw deep downfield, their OL was terrible last year, but they're keeping him upright this year. Then I looked at the sack stats for the Bengals, Stealers, and ViQueens (their opponents) and those 3 teams are at the bottom of the league in sacks. So perhaps the Bears OL improvement isn't as impressive as I thought. Either that or they're so good that they just sucked all the will out of the pass rushers of those 3 teams they played.

Alright, in any case, I still think chalking it all up to Wilson and the play calls is simplistic. Look at the Carolina game. The pass protection was markedly better in the 2nd half, and that wasn't because Wilson was throwing a bunch of quick slants. They blocked better. It is possible for them to improve their blocking, and when they block better it's noticeable.

I disagree that we get what we get with Wilson and Bevell, and that there simply isn't much improvement out there for the OL to make in pass pro.

There is generally a much larger drop-off in play quality from your 1st string offensive linemen to your 2nd string guys than you would see at other positions, especially defensive ones. Maybe it’s because it disrupts the continuity within the group. Maybe there’s something inherent to the position that creates a huge gap between elite talent and average talent. Whatever the case, you rarely see a Richard Sherman situation occur within a linemen group. It’s cool to be hopeful, but I’m trying to be realistic, too.

Actually, Bevell may have more to do with it than any of us realize. This line just isn't built for pass protection, they're the opposite of Holmgren's preferences. So, they need help with play-calling too. They need to have a DL guessing, and I haven't seen Bevell reach his groove either yet. I'm a known Bevell critic, but, I've learned to accept that he needs his scripted plays before he gets going. And, at least so far this year, he seems to need some games to reach a rhythm.

so if you have criticism or concern about anything, you're just whining.

got it!

As far as I can tell, it's the people who want the O-line to be the disaster who are casting the stones.

The lulz continue.

It's even worse than missing 3 starters, it's more like we're missing 4.

McQ was starting at guard before Okung got hurt, so although technically he is a starter, he's playing out of position. Carp is playing now, and say what you want about Carp vs. McQ, Carp was starting at the beginning of the year. The coaches thought McQ was their best option. If you don't buy that, and you think that McQ is weak and Carp should've been starting over him, then you really must be loving McQ at LT. So out of 5 positions on the OL, the only healthy starter playing his position is...Sweezy.

Yep, nothing to worry about here. It's all folks who derive pleasure from inventing weak spots on the team. It's that we want the line to suck, we're imagining the injuries and ineffectiveness we've seen. Having 4 of 5 positions on the OL manned by folks who didn't start the year there, that's not truly important when going against a good defense and one of the best D lineman in the NFL right now on the road. No, really we're just bored and looking for attention. /sarcasm

Reading comprehension: a lost art. My point was that the name calling emanates from one side not the other.

On the other hand, the sky is falling posts about the OL are a bit much. This team is well coached, and that includes the offensive line. It's either Tom Cable is a master at his job or he's awful at it and can only turn some people in stars. The board can't have it both ways. (And let's not forget that Giacomini was practice squad in GB while Sweezy was a 7th round pick. The proposition that Bowie and Jeanpierre have something to show us isn't as preposterous as some people want it to be.) Sounds the alarms after our backups show themselves to be completely incompetent.

Awww, I'm sorry, when responding to your post where you accuse dissenters of wanting the line to be bad and thus dismissing any valid points they might have, you feel you've been maligned because your intent was to emphasize something other than their implied delusion.

I...I don't know how I'll ever get to sleep tonight. I have wronged you so horribly. Tissue?

I concede the line are more athletic than they are huge dudes who can't be moved. Well Carp is big but even he isn't a pass blocker by nature, we don't seem to have anyone who can do that.

I have to also give you that early in games I have felt that we've had homerun type plays being called and then later on for some reason, when Bevell finally gets around to it, we see screens, rollout-passes-to-FBs, that sort of thing. That seems...backwards to me. Protect the QB early, and if you can establish the run then dial up some play action. If you can't establish the run, well, if you still need to go deep then do...something besides having your QB in the pocket. Maybe only throw deep after rolling out.

I'm with ya on that 45. Against SF and Jax, Lynch was running well, behind some good lanes early. Then, they'd go 5 wide on 3rd and 2? WTH(eck)?

At least to me, I just don't worry about that. I think that's who Bevell is, and I need to trust that, because it paid off BIG last year. IMO, he needs time in-game and in season to get a feel for his team. I'm 100% positive that will happen, and when it does the pass-protection will go from poor to average.

The o-line is the one position where I believe high draft picks is a waste (with the exception of left tackle). You can build an awesome oline with 4 average linemen and a beast at LT. Unfortunately for us, that LT is gone. Losing Okung is a huge and utter loss. Lucky for us, he comes back in time for the playoff push.

Regarding Unger/RT, I seriously do not see us suffering much. I actually think Bowie is a better RT than the starter. At Center you'll see a slight drop off, but not enough to notice.

This is all true if there is a solid gameplan and everyone on the oline knows and understands each other. I'm a little worried because of this. Does the new Center have any understanding with the rest of the oline? What about Bowie/Bailey? They are rookies after all.

This game will be tough, but this is a great learning experience for the backups. The more games they get under their belt early in the season, the better off they will be once playoff time comes around and as always happens 1-2 olinemen get hurt.

remember when Ungar went out of the Min game and we dominated them starting at that pount. He's a big loss but we can survive. Even if we do lose this game cause of injuries it isn't the end of the world. We're 3-1 heading into Indy vs a team we match up well against

Yes, Bevell is one place where there can't be much whining. The offense at the end of last year was historically good so there's quite some capital Bevell built up there.

And even this year, though there have been some head scratchers, there have been some really sick play calls. The 1st TD pass to Miller last week was a great call (that I wish weren't wasted on the Jags), and there was one other...can't recollect right now I swear it was a run play called in the SF game that I never saw coming and neither did the Niners that picked up a 3rd and more-than-short.

I find it far less predictable than Holmgren's play calling. When Bevell calls runs in passing situations, you really don't see it coming. The 3rd and long draw from Holmgren was so patented I was honestly more surprised when he didn't call it.

LMAO at this thread. We're missing 3 starters on this OL going against a very good defense on the road, and when we had those starters we weren't running the ball consistently (nor were we protecting Russell, but it seems we've just accepted it's okay our QB fears for his life every game).

Yeah, every other aspect of the team is aces, but the OL is a mess. Can we win? Sure. But it could also have the makings of a real disaster against the Texan D.

But hey, we can compare our situation to Denver where Manning actually gets time to throw and they've only lost one guy, that n=1 comparison makes it all better. Or we can say that hey, OLs are only good at one thing, our OL has always sucked at pass pro, losing 3 starters means young guys playing and run blocking is easier to pick up on the fly than pass blocking...that is one tortured chain of logic. Okay so those two don't hold water, onto "next man up." These are building blocks for OL confidence in this game? Wait, I have one more, we're all just looking for something to complain about because we're winning, *waves hands* there are no OL issues here. All these arguments do is make any rational third party say "holy crap, that OL is REALLY in trouble."

Again, I think this team can pull it off. The game is not played on paper. But there's an objective reality that we're putting our injured unit (not our strongest unit when healthy) against a healthy Texans unit that IS a strength is less than ideal. There's nothing about pointing that out which should elicit scorn from other fans.
This.

Everyone who disagrees with the above really needs to take a reality pill or just be quiet and let the big boys discuss this situation.

The real question is: If the oline can't protect Wilson and he's going to have Watts and others breathing down his neck, if the oline can't block well enough to get the running game going, then what do the Hawks do to generate any offense? In this game we have two advantages: Our punter is WAYYYYYY better than their punter and should help us win the field position battle. Our defense should shut down their offense. With our oline in shambles - and with both pro bowlers and our RT out, that's shambles people, we are just as dead in the water offensively as Houston will be - but we have the better QB. So what do we do?

The two best defenses in the NFL are facing off and both look to have shaky offenses. Special Teams couldn't be more important. We have the advantage there. But it's 10AM in Texas.

This game looks like one team or the other is going to win ugly.

"...let the big boys discuss this situation"

LOL, the big boys are discussing it. They are the coaches of the Seahawks and they probably discuss it 12 hours per day. We here are fans posting on a forum, and nothing we say or do will change anything on the field. Nor should it. So relax and enjoy the convo.

In his presser yesty, Bevell admitted to getting too cute in the first two games.
