Carson's fumblitis has been a large focus (and with good reason), but there's another side of this equation and that's defensive turnovers. Since 2013 we've been severely lacking in creating turnovers on defense. I heard this stat this week and that is that we have created 27 turnovers on defense making us 3rd in the league. This would be the highest ranking since 2013. Many people will point to our defensive rankings for yards allowed, points allowed etc, but creating turnovers can negate these statistics and is the reason our defense can actually come up huge in any given game.

EDIT TO ADD: We are also 4th in turnover differential at 10

The turnovers are awesome and reveal how this defense has gotten better as the season has progressed.

I listed to national sport's commentators and the ones who get it are the ones who are commenting on how this team isn't the same team that we were earlier in the season.

Then, there ere the ones who point to the stats that are skewed by early season inadequacies. They're just not paying attention.

They have definitely improved the past few weeks, which is a good thing.

There can be a problem with over focusing on TOs, though. If you focus too much on grabbing the ball, the runner can fight for more yards. First and foremost, make the tackle. For that reason, I wasn't too worried early in the season about this stat, and I figured/hoped that it would get better as the year wore on. We're getting more weather games now and the wet/cold ball has a hand in it.

As long as we're basically on the plus side of the margin, I'm fairly satisfied.

Yup....our defense has been a work in progress all season. It took longer than I'd have liked, but Pete/John have been able to get the right combination together on the field and it's made a huge difference. I'd bet that at season's end, the difference between the final 8 games vs the first 8 games would be huge.

If you look at season stats and rankings, it's not that good, but the recent trends are all in the right direction. :2thumbs:

I'd go as far to say the #1 reason we've won the past three weeks is the turnover differential.

Not with our offense also giving up critical turnovers as well. We certainly don't win the SF game, and probably not the Vikings game either without that differential.
