Turner's true elite speed already gives him a skill that separates him from all the other top free agents in this year's class, and notably, the other top free-agent shortstops. And with rule changes coming to MLB in 2023 that should encourage more stealing -- bigger bases that will reduce the distance between them, limits on the number of pickoff throws -- the team that gets Turner will get an even bigger competitive advantage at the top of the lineup.

Fastest avg. "max-effort" SB sprint speed, 2022
Min. 5 SB
1. Trea Turner: 30.0 ft/sec
2. (tie) Bubba Thompson / Tim Locastro: 29.9 ft/sec
4. Julio Rodríguez: 29.8 ft/sec
5. Garrett Mitchell: 29.7 ft/sec
"Max effort": Player's top 50% of SB

Re-opens that old "who's our shortstop" argument. 🤷‍♂️

One of the articles says Turner can play 2d base. Didn't see a lot on his fielding skills there, but his offense would definitely be a plus. Maybe JP would move over. I wonder if they've discussed it with him.

Yeah, you gotta' think the conversations have happened. Just in case. Can't really assume that a SS would be willing to move over. But we can't assume JP would be cool with it.
My gut is that JP would do what's best for the team. If it means adding another legit bat, just do it. If he doesn't like it, he's going to have to learn how to get over it.

The thing is, there's a money question. SS makes more money than 2B, usually. It's the flashier "marquee" position. When you start playing with guys' paychecks they get a little edgy. ;)

The Mariners have to give a draft pick to LA if they sign Turner don't they? I am probably wrong on this...

That's why DiPoto didn't offer Haniger, he didn't want to hamstring Mitch's free agency by the signing team having to give the Mariners a draft pick.

12 players decline qualifying offer; 2 accept

November 16th, 2022

Dodgers: SS Trea Turner
Turner is not only one of the fastest players in baseball, he’s also a potent hitter, winning a batting title in 2021 and posting a .311/.361/.509 slash (131 OPS+) since the beginning of 2019. Only nine position players across the Majors had more bWAR than Turner (11.2) in the past two years.
Potential 2023 Draft compensation: Pick after the completion of Round 4

Turner has been on the M's radar for several years now.. he's actually a 2nd basemen.

Looks like he would be worth a pick. We're not really in 'build the farm system' mode any more. Sure, we still want to keep players in the pipeline, but we're more in 'win now' mode where a dynamic player like this would be worth it.

LAA are trying desperately to convince Ohtani to stay. Hopefully it all blows up in their face.

Santana to Pittsburgh. He came up huge for us multiple times Ms will miss him. I would have thrown him a decent 1-2 year deal.

Clutch situational for sure.. every other time.. no..

Problem is hes going to be soooo much better next year without the shift.. as he got it almost 70 percent of time even as a switcher

Carlos sucked for the most part, he was fun when he hit it though.

Angels are cleaning up. Hate it.

How did that Trea Turner signing with the Mariners go? That's right.... Philadelphia just added him to their roster after losing the World Series. And they gave up NOTHING but money to get him, they didn't blow their load on a trade. The Phillies have added nearly as much free agent salary after losing the World Series as the Mariners already had for their total 2023 projection. That is called going all-in on a World Series run, not what the M's are doing.

We get it already dude. The M's suck and don't want to win the world series. That is if you're actually an M's fan. I honestly wonder.
And what about all the other teams in the league that didn't sign Turner? And how do you know HE didn't CHOOSE to go to Philly. Free agents are FREE TO GO WHERE THEY WANT.
You have NO idea if the M's offered him a deal or not, ZERO. But you spend all your time blasting your team. There is no way in hell you are a Mariners fan.
