So, this Tate conversation continues. I've posted before about Tate and tried to keep an even keel. While I'll miss seeing him play for the Seahawks, it's all more about the business side of it than we understand when that is said.
Positive:
Someone said he overvalues himself. (Perhaps a bit.) But, I loved the player Tate and thought he was a near perfect WR for this team. I didn't like the comparison to Hines Ward... because it was Hines Ward. But, yeah... he's like a tough RB playing WR so that is a fitting compliment.
Whether or not Seattle throws the ball enough for WR's liking, players need to play smart when they get the ball. Most of the time, I loved what Tate did in YAC. But, sometimes he drove me nuts running backwards after getting the first down and hurt the team that way. Yeah, sometimes fighting for those extra yards turn into electric big plays. The deal is... if you're going to do that, you can't take a loss. Smart players KNOW the down and yards to gain. That's basic. No, I'm not saying Tate isn't a smart player. But, I'll say he does have room to improve in some of the mental aspects of the game. He has continued to get better and better and his future with the Hawks looked on the verge of potential greatness. Would have loved to see Wilson and Tate continue developing together.
Not so positive:
Comparisons with others contracts and jealousy, envy, whatever creep in and the truth comes out that players are only team players if one feels respected by their team. So, there are conditions. So, "team" probably and truthfully isn't the most important thing. Yeah, I know people want to "take care of their families" (we all do) and you can admire that all you want. The team aspect supposedly comes in once contracts are settled? Trouble is... there's not that many players who are satisfied/content with their contracts enough for that to not be a constant issue. Where's the gratefulness... not only for compensation but also simply for the opportunity?
It's a bit disappointing that he's not sounding as grateful as he should be to the Seahawks for drafting him and working with him to get him to this point. I think he initially went that route, but then whatever riled him up changed his tune (truth came out?) Sounds more like Tate did them a favor and they owed him?
Of course we all would have rather seen all this worked out differently than it has gone.
Thanks for the memories, Tate. Hope you can be part of a Lions team that rises to the top of that division. You'll be missed by the 12's.
