I love what Tate brings to the return game. Other than NOT fielding the first punt (which I re-watched 2 seconds ago), I have nothing but praise for his decision making. Here's why:
This is not your Dad's NFL special teams. Special teams in the old days were approached with more of a "by the way" attitude. Yeah, there has always been GREAT return men, but the best punters in the league of old, guys like Ray Guy, would'nt be much better than above avg in todays NFL. Then you have the gunners and burners that keep employed by being near flawless. Watching Cushing's int last night reminded me of how firkin elite players have become....and the same has to be said for coverage guys on ST.
When Tate is fielding a punt inside the 10, or even 5 (!), a wave of information is sweeping his brain. Trajectory of the ball, proximity of the opposition, etc. Guys like John Ryan drop the ball on a spot like they're kicking a balata. As long as Tate don't muff it, he is likely to improve our field position, or at least, not allow it to get any worse. A punt that gets spotted inside the 3 turns a potential drive into a probable punt....if not worse.
The ONLY thing I don't like about using Tate on PRs is if he has to expel much energy on any given return, the D can probably play off of him the first play of the ensuing series and focus on the run or another player. Other than that, I think we have a great return man in Tate and I'll bet even money he takes one to the house, sooner than later.
