First off, I love Golden, and what he brings in the return game. But I'm a little concerned with his decision making on returning I believe 3 punts inside the 5 yr line, which I believe he should have let go.

That was probably by plan. After letting the first one go and almost getting a couple of safeties he was smart for getting the O more room

No why take the risk that
1) The ball could out of bounds and it would be at like the 2 yard
2) Downed at like the 2 after it lands

Pete talked about this in his presser. I didn't catch the whole thing but he mentioned cuing off the gunners and that Tate misread one or more of theses. It shall be fixed! And as always... love me some Tater!

They were all corner kicks, and not taking it would've resulted in being on the two.

Yes, Tate actually made a good call on a at least two coffin corner type kicks. Also, he had room to field the punts. I thought Tate did well on PR, nothing overly flashy but got up field quickly on the majority of returns.

Carolina did a lot of angle kick if he let it go it would probably go inside the 5 that is why he returned those punts

According to Pete's presser yesterday, the decision to fair catch or take it out was discussed. He's new at it, and it will be corrected.

I'm all for Tate taking a chance, whenever possible. The kickoff's all but been eliminated and Tate is born for returning punts.

In typical Tate fashion, it'll be REALLY awkward and nerve racking, but he'll break a couple.

if there's a small chance for a good or great return, then I want to take it, even if it means starting behind the twenty more often.

I love what Tate brings to the return game. Other than NOT fielding the first punt (which I re-watched 2 seconds ago), I have nothing but praise for his decision making. Here's why:

This is not your Dad's NFL special teams. Special teams in the old days were approached with more of a "by the way" attitude. Yeah, there has always been GREAT return men, but the best punters in the league of old, guys like Ray Guy, would'nt be much better than above avg in todays NFL. Then you have the gunners and burners that keep employed by being near flawless. Watching Cushing's int last night reminded me of how firkin elite players have become....and the same has to be said for coverage guys on ST.

When Tate is fielding a punt inside the 10, or even 5 (!), a wave of information is sweeping his brain. Trajectory of the ball, proximity of the opposition, etc. Guys like John Ryan drop the ball on a spot like they're kicking a balata. As long as Tate don't muff it, he is likely to improve our field position, or at least, not allow it to get any worse. A punt that gets spotted inside the 3 turns a potential drive into a probable punt....if not worse.

The ONLY thing I don't like about using Tate on PRs is if he has to expel much energy on any given return, the D can probably play off of him the first play of the ensuing series and focus on the run or another player. Other than that, I think we have a great return man in Tate and I'll bet even money he takes one to the house, sooner than later.
