If that's the case, hopefully geNOTTHEANSWER starts on Sunday. Gotta' showcase him for a trade to wherever Pete goes.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith stands to gain the most. He needs 386 more passing yards to surpass his career-high 4,282 yards, which would earn him a $2 million bonus. If Smith maintains a completion percentage of 69.75% or higher, he’ll bank another $2 million. Currently, at 70.1%, he’s just barely in the clear. If the Seahawks secure a playoff spot or reach 10 wins, Smith earns another $2 million, making his final two weeks critical for both Seattle and his bank account.
This is a week out of date.
He's currently at 4097 yards, so he needs 185 yards to meet that bonus number.
His completion percentage is 73.9%, so barring a really bad game he should meet that easily.
If the Seahawks win, he gets another 2 million.

Assuming the completion percentage bonus is in the bag, he stands to pull in another $4 million if he plays an average game and the Seahawks win. We've seen player reaction when coaches screw a player out of his bonuses. While it might be easy to say "it's better for the seahawks not to pay out these bonuses", it would probably not go over well with the rest of the team, and with prospective free agents.

Exactly. Teams sitting players in order to avoid triggering bonuses is something that spreads across the league very quickly.

Some people in here will refuse to believe that Geno is better than Howell no matter how badly Howell does (and has already done), so there's little point in starting him to find out. They've already made up their minds.

They can just pay him that money anyway. That's what teams usually do when key players are close on performance incentives.

If we're talking about wanting to look good to teammates and prospective free agents, not making him play and still giving him that money would likely go over even better. It shows trust and is a sign of goodwill.

This feels like a straw man. I'm not really seeing anyone say they think Howell is better than Geno, despite toffee's butthurt trolling. If this game was for the division, nobody would be calling for Howell to start. It's more about seeing how he, and the other backups, respond in a situation that's difficult to simulate in practice. We see teams do this every year in similar situations. I guarantee that if any Rams fans are calling for Jimmy Garoppolo to start this week, it isn't because they think he's better than Stafford.

Toffee's shtick is getting pretty old. No one has been pounding the table for Howell around here. And I do not at all believe he is better than Geno. But what good other than Genos desire for bonuses does it do the franchise to put him out there at this point?
Let Howell get some reps and see what he can do.
We scored 6 points last week for goodness sakes.

I wouldn’t Just start Howell this Sunday I would release Geno Today, That would be a good sign to fans that the franchise wants to be more than mediocre.
