Come on, NFL. Stop protecting your refs and hold them accountable.
This! The NFL and Referees spend so much time covering each other's butts, it's sickening. You know after a big penalty when all the refs huddle up to discuss? How many times have they picked up the flag and said 'no penalty'? Seems like it should happen at least occasionally, but it hardly ever does. To me, that communicates that the officials are more concerned with protecting their own than keeping the game fair.
These huge drive and game changing penalty flags are really disrupting the game. After a big play, I feel like I can't even celebrate because there's laundry on the field so often. I've felt for a long time (since the original Instant Replay days) that penalties need to be review-able or at least challenge-able.
My own mini-rant: it absolutely, positively should not be the referee on the field that looks at the film. He has a !$$#!@ stake in the outcome of the challenge. If he overturns a call, he is essentially saying he and his crew messed up.
It really seems like the Referees and the NFL do everything they can to keep a lid on the really bad calls, and they are doing very little to change it. I absolutely don't buy the garbage about any conspiracy to help favorite teams out or force parity, but I do think the NFL could be doing something about it. When you have a head referee come out 3 years later and say his crew changed the outcome of "The Big Game", you should be taking a closer look at how to leverage technology to hold referees accountable.
