The Sounders subscribe to the philosophy that you can't have enough midfielders. It seems that's the position they target heavily. Thomas is a good pickup but he's - guess what - a midfielder. If his acquisition means less playing time for Andy Rose, then all will be right in the world of the Sounders.

To be fair, it's CONCACAF, there really is no group of death.............and as seahawks1983 pointed out, ask any Sounder what the worst part of this tournament is and they'd tell you the soul sucking travel to 3rd world country facilities in 100 degree heat with 500 people in the stands playing on the worst surfaces this side of a dog track.

Most Mexicans i've spoke to don't even care about it, neither do the teams in Mexico. All about their league and the Copa Libertadores. I wish they'd invite MLS teams to it. Would test us against the best and would give it more exposure up here to compete with UEFA. Even if MLS teams had to play a qualifier to get into it, to stop bad MLS/CONCACAF teams (Canadian) getting in would be fine.

I think being in it would slowly raise the standard of MLS. If MLS teams got embarrassed in it, there would be more pressure to innovate/raise the cap and invest in quality. IF MLS teams did do well they'd be up against the cream of Argentina, Brazil etc while doing well.

This would be awesome. Do you think it will ever happen in the near future?

I ask because even though I'm a Sounders fan Kansas City is a huge soccer town and their MLS team isn't bad at all. And their stadium is top tier and unbelievable to go to.

I have heard the opposite.

I usually hate still frames but....

The line is slightly skewed, but Neagle is still on sides. What is even more concerning is that a line judge, trailing play by five yards, felt that he was in a good enough place to make that call.

Neagle was onside.

The PK call went against how the ENTIRE game had been called up to that point. If the ref had been calling the game that tight KC would have been down to 10 after the studs Marshall took to the midsection. Ref played it real loose all game and then in a split second awarded a penalty on a 50/50 ball (which normally keepers get the benefit of the doubt on).

Frustrating points dropped.

Nice win....at least there's one team that wins consistently in Seattle during the spring/summer time.

I was out town, so didn't get to watch the match.

How did Thomas look?

Brazilian.

Not horribly quick, great with the ball at his feet (Nutmegged 1 opponent, dribbled out of trouble a few times). Seems like a good winger. Only went 60. Few miscues due to not playing with the boys for long.

I think he's a solid addition to the club.

Both games streamed on Youtube.

One of the worst performances by a ref I've seen in a long long time. He pretty much single handedly gave the Timbers the win. Embarrassing... I don't blame Arena for not taking the Open Cup seriously, why should he? USSF is f*cking joke and they showed up again tonight.

10 against 11 - Sounders looked like they would win. But losing Martins - that killed it.

The officiating team sould never be allowed to referee a competitive game ever again - even pee wees.

Aziras (non-red card )red card was just too much.
As much as I know it will hurt him, Dempsey snatching the referees book and tearing it up in front of him just summed up the frustration the entire Sounders team must have felt - I CANNOT FAULT HIM FOR IT!

I had an obnoxious Portland fan next to me and I had to ask the police to get him out of the area and on to the sideline (I feared for his safety - and I was close to throttling him as was everyone around me.)

Nights like this forge the long term DNA of a club.
It takes the Seattle Portland rivalry to a new level.
