I'd rather have Lynch than Suh, if the money is pulled from the same pot.

Elaborate?

If it's an issue of giving Lynch what he wants or ponying up for Suh, it's a finite pool of money we're drawing from. Not to mention Wilson and Wagner. I can't see us giving Lynch a new 1-year contract and signing Suh and extending RW and BW. There's only so much money to go around.

Its just as cut and dry like that.

The cap is at an estimated 24 m.

We dont know how extensions are going to affect the cap.

We dont know if Lynch is going to retire or maybe just wants to finish his career in Oakland.

Either way Seahawks have talent in Turbin and Michael and heading into a draft that is deep in RB talent.

There are plenty of contracts that are going to be in consideration moving forward in terms of cost for production, age, injury or moving on from role players.

Cut, trade, or restructure, and extend to free up more cap in:

Unger, Okung, Mebane, Miller and McDaniel that can manipulate the cap.

And adding Suh to an already great defense will just allow the Seahawks a better margin for error if its trying to transition to cheaper, more reliable players.

Bottom-line is the Seahawks arent as strapped for cash as one might believe to make a move like this.

They're paying a DL half of $100M? How do they plan on resigning Wilson and Wagner? Along with Baldwin and Okung next year, possibly even Lynch? I'd rather use the money for more depth and resigning the players I mentioned...

They're going to get Wilson regardless. It's not the least bit of a concern. There is money to get Suh if they're serious, but not enough to actually outbid teams willing to offer Suh a blank check.

There are always players that won't hang around. It's the nature of the business.

Easier said than done. Do you really think it's realistic to expect all those players to restructure their deals? In pro football, all players want more money, whether they're on good teams or bad. I'm not saying it's not possible, I'm just asking whether all of them would re-structure their deals...

Exactly, the situation is perfect for Seattle and Seattle only. I feel any other team pays sticker price.

Also, methinks a lot of you guys are going to miss Byron Maxwell a lot more than you think you will.

I kind of hope we pay Max and Lynch instead of Suh.. but to each their own.
No doubt Maxwell would be missed. But, if he chooses to sign elsewhere and take advantage of his payday what can you do? Is anyone saying they want Maxwell gone? If I understand correctly, there's a pretty good offer on the table for Lynch. No one is telling Maxwell to hit the road. What else can the Seahawks do to keep Lynch here?

I think the Seahawks like to keep their own guys whenever possible. But if Lynch isn't coming back and Maxwell is more focused on a big payday, Suh as a consolation prize wouldn't be too shabby. If any of this is legit and Suh is really in play, that's a good problem to have deciding between an elite RB and our 2nd best corner vs. an elite DT.

If the Seahawks end up with "none of the above", then there's some missing to be done.

This would be amazing, but I was also very excited when Jared Allen was a done deal.

You don't have to restructure all of them. Some would get cut, some would restructure to stay, and maybe even a trade to say Jacksonville of one of the DT's?

Either way yes if they want to do it they can get it done. We are in a very good position as far as cap right now (which is why they have an offer out to Lynch if he wants to continue playing). This is what these guys are paid to do, to figure out how to get the best team on the field with the cap they have.

Lastly do you really think Pete and John would make this deal if we couldn't sign Wilson or anyone else they wanted? Haven't they earned a little bit more trust than that? They've done quite a good job managing the cap and retaining talent to this point. If they make a deal like the rumored one for Suh then they have a plan (and the money) to sign anyone else they want too...

Could mean the end of Mebane though, right? And if Mebane is gone does that still afford cap space for Maxwell?

They could maybe offer Mebane another year to restructure at a lower amount. But he's already 30 so probably not the best idea to give a 30 year old coming off an injury another year or two.

As far as Maxwell goes, he's rumored to get anywhere from 7M to 12M a year, depending on how many team's are hot and heavy after him. Which for a #1 or #2 CB with his skills? A LOT OF TEAMS.

So cutting Mebane would only get you halfway to Maxwell.

Maxwell- 12M a year for a guy with 17-18 career starts? He has stayed healthy for entire season just once in his 4 years in the NFL.

If he gets that much cash, good for him, but he won't sniff 7M per from Seattle IMO. Mebane will be a cut or restructure IMO. He is due 5.5m next season.

If Cromartie gets $6M at 31 yrs old, Maxwell will get $7M+ at 26 yrs old

Suh has stated that "he wants to be the highest paid defensive player in the NFL" and that "his agent will decide where he plays football next year." Dude is about the cash. I'd be less shocked to see Carroll coach Super Bowl 50 wearing a tutu than I would be seeing Suh sign a deal like the OPs post says.

"If Suh was telling the truth when he said his agent will pick the player’s next team, Suh undoubtedly will end up playing for the highest bidder. If Suh ultimately decides to interject his own opinion regarding whether it’s worth taking less to go to one specific location, then maybe the highest bidder won’t secure his services."

Contradiction there.

Being about the cash didn't stop us from paying Sherman.

No way this is true. Schneider would have to sign off on it and I guarantee you he has NOT made contact with Suh as tampering rules strictly forbid this.

March 7-10: Clubs are permitted to contact, and enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become Unrestricted Free Agents upon the expiration of their 2014 contracts at 4:00 p.m., New York time, on March 10. However, a contract cannot be executed with a new club until 4:00 p.m., New York time, on March 10.

File this rumor along with all the Jared Allen done deal rumors from last year.

Oh to be young and naive... what position are you in to guarantee anything?

I think the OP is being honest, but that said this feels like kind of a flimsy rumor to me. WIth the league now allowing a 3 day "tampering window" before FA starts, I don't know if I would buy JS risking draft picks to discuss terms before that point, especially a month before. Maybe he did, but I honestly can't remember a single time I heard a tampering rumor a month before FA that proved true. I would find this rumor more comforting and believable if it stated that this was merely the number discussed internally by the FO, even just knowing that Seattle would make a push for Suh is big news.

I find the average per year figure to be believable (since Suh would presumably take a small discount), but at age 28, you think Suh would seek a longer deal since this will be his last meaningful dip into FA. Obviously, if this 4/55 rumor proved true, it would be incredibly good news for the Seahawks.

I disagree with those who think we are just fine at DT with regards to interior pass rush. Other than a 5 week "hot streak" from Hill, our interior pass rush was a big problem all season. And while I think Hill is a decent player, he's more of a cleanup guy than a pressure maker. And he's not a 3 down player, either. More of a nickle / NASCAR DT. Marsh has some talent but seems like a player without a position to me and is clearly a purely situational player.

I think Hill would pair very nicely with Suh on pass rush downs inside, perhaps inflating his sack totals as high as the double digits. But on his own I think Hill is probably a 3-6 sack a year player, and more of a good component player than a true difference maker.

We don't have that 3 down badass DT right now. We have a lot of specialized 2 down guys and role players. That 3 down badass DT is notoriously hard to get, I think Seattle would be crazy to pass on the opportunity for Suh. If anyone wonders the impact it would have, look at what Warren Sapp did for Tampa.

Last thought, Seattle might not need to cut anyone to sign Suh. They could just backload some of the deals they sign this season to utilize future salary cap expansion. The salary cap is expanding at a record rate right now. And if they did cut somebody, why cut good players on reasonable contracts like Mebane and Miller? There are much better "trim the fat" options than those guys, and there are also some tradeable assets on sizable deals too.
