Rules for interviewing coaching candidates

Does anybody else here absolutely hate the rules that allow coaches on playoff teams the interview during the playoffs with other teams? Seems like a huge distraction to that coach (Kubiak) and likely the team. The rule states:

Per NFL rules, all initial interviews with candidates who are employed by teams that either missed the playoffs or received a first-round bye must be conducted virtually until after the divisional round. That does not apply to unemployed coaches.

What’s worse, even with what this says is that after the divisional round, they can actually go and visit them in person. It makes no sense to me.

Thoughts?

Well, can't really do a lot of actual game planning until next week anyway, when we know who we'll be playing.

This week will be mostly basics and working on things they were off on last week.

I don’t like it either but I suspect this is something the owners decided amongst themselves.

Teams that need coaching staff want it ASAP.

I BELIEVE:
Any coach on a team that is still playing ball should be off limits.

I’m aware that generally speaking the better coaches are on the teams that are still playing but that doesn’t change my opinion.

I prefer having it out in the open like this. You'd have to be pretty delusional to think there isn't contact going on behind the scenes with those who aren't available to be interviewed yet. It shouldn't be THAT much of a distraction anyway.

Personally, I think they should just make it a rule no interviewing by anybody or of anybody until after the super bowl to make it all fair.....but like Rat said, it most likely would/is all get backdoored anyway.

I agree and said the same thing too about if your team is still playing in the playoffs, you should be off-limits.

Best I can tell, five teams have requested to interview Kubiak, and five teams have requested to interview Vance Joseph. This is all standard practice, but not so great. I don't see any positives for the coordinators interviewing while football is still going on that doesn't also mean negatives for their current team.

I believe they can only interview in person after the divisional round if their team is out of the playoffs. Nothing wrong with this rule. Hence the Seahawks having to wait for MM when they wanted to hire him.

Edit: plus it allows teams to pivot if they know the coordinator on a one seed isn’t going to take the job. Imagine having to wait for the Super Bowl to end and then you miss out on all the other available coaches (and there are some pretty big names available this year) and then they don’t even take the job.

All the more reason to make it across the board.

No poaching until after the Super Bowl for ALL teams.

Then any problems that arise for teams looking for, or losing staff are spread out evenly across the league.

Maybe so, but I believe there would be a strong potential for “whistleblowers” as well.

Sanctions/loss of draft picks etc could all be good deterrents.

I’m not convinced the potential back door stuff would actually be much of a problem, especially after one or two teams suffered as a result.

At the end of the day, it’s probably being done just how the owners (collectively) have chosen it to be.

I don’t expect anything to change anytime soon.

You are correct in that teams still in the playoffs after the divisional round can have their coaches only interviewed virtually. I just hate the idea of coaches that are on teams that are trying to win a Super Bowl in the playoffs thinking about and planning for an interview when their sole focus should be on the team they work for currently.

I agree, but...based on what's going on today, it's so crazy that I can see why these teams are scrambling to beat other teams to the available candidates. The Harbaugh firing and Miami and New York situations have turned everything into craziness. Then there's the talk that if Green Bay and/or Buffalo lose, those coaches could get fired, and when all is said and done, there really aren't enough head coach candidates who are legitimately capable of taking one of these dumpster fire teams anywhere quickly.

I really think two-three college coaches will be moving up over the next few weeks.
