Role Models

All I keep hearing is how Sherman needs to close his mouth and be a good role model for others. If you are so blinded by the fact that a guy who grew up in Compton, went to Stanford, and made it to the NFL is not enough of a role model for your little ones or your adult self, then I am unaware on who would be. I love the way Sherman lays it down, he knows that 80% of football is mental. And if you can get in your opponents head you can gain an advantage. To all of you who need him to be something he is not after already achieving so much himself, I pose to you this gem. Make Russel Wilson or Earl Thomas this iconic persona you built up in your head. Earl has just as many accomplishments as Sherman and even more in fact. Let Sherman be Sherman so those fans of us who enjoy something new, something entertaining, something Seahawk can continue to be entertained by one of the premier players on our favorite team.

People always want the swagger and the tough defensive mentality, then they always complain when you see how you cultivate it. People I am sure hated Prime Time because of his antics. But would you trade that edge for a "Class" act player who didn't deliver?

I will take my Sanders, Shermans, Bradys, Sapps, Mosss, Lewis's

You can have your nice guys, I want the killers who know they are killers.

Any parent who expects a professional athlete to be their child's role model is already a failure, in my book.

Tell them to look at a mathematician, engineer, musician, homemaker, husband, father and so on, and see how often they fail to love up to that same expectation.

Until Richard Sherman emerged, my favorite Seattle athlete was Gary Payton. If you are able to trash talk at a high level, and can back it with your play, you will throw opponents off their game. What I love about Sherm is that he doesn't put it out there unless he has the goods, and he really has a way with words.

i'd want my kids to look up to the Earl Thomas's and Russell Wilson's. If my kid talked like Sherm I'd put him up for adoption. 99% wont like that, but thats my view. His schtick is getting old. Like him as a player, but he needs to grow up.

When you have to tell someone your better than them, you're probably not that cool...

Role models like Russell Wilson don't come around very often, and as was said above (and by the eminent Charles Barkley before), professional sports is not a great place to look for role models.

As long as Sherm keeps playing at this level, I hope he keeps getting in opponents' heads. Keep in mind, he doesn't denigrate other players (reserving that for media hacks), and gives credit to others when it is do. Rock on Sherm!

EIGHTY PERCENT of football is mental?

I'm going to need a footnote on that one.

My son, who is almost 22, has mad respect for Sherman. He just discovered him on his own. He thinks it's awesome that he came out of Compton, graduated from Stanford, is playing elite level football, and the thing that my son admires the most about Sherm is his twist on SWAG and doing things for kids in his old neighborhood. Students With A Goal. He thinks it's genius and he said it speaks volumes about his character as a person.

For the record, he is a Lions fan but said he might actually be into the Hawks more now.

Sherman is awesome, and I met his mom and she is gracious and a fantastic role model for her son.

Being a "role model" isn't this all inclusive thing either. Someone can look up to him for his work ethic and his achievement of goals while having no particular opinion about his personality.

Sherm is definitely letting his mouth write a check that his butt will eventually have to cash, but so long as he backs it up by playing cornerback at the highest level I've seen in the past decade (last season, he was better than Revis ever was), he can talk all the shit he wants. He's on our team, he is attracting the networks to cover our team, and for once we appear to be media darlings heading into the next season, due in no small part to the efforts of Richard Sherman.

I'm behind him until his play no longer keeps up with his mouth.

I second that.

Now that is a good reason to give a kid up for adoption.

We live in Michigan. The only reason I am a Hawk fan is because we lived near Yakima when I was a kid. We moved when I was 17. I can't expect my son to become a Seahawk fan. I just let him like whom ever he wants. When you are born and raised out here, no matter who your parent roots for, you will probably become a Lions fan. All of my close friends are. :141847_bnono:

Bullchit, When you get your belly full of disrespect, you make them prove that THEY are right, and that YOU are wrong.
Sherman has the kind of personality that just won't allow him to be a wall flower. AND, in most cases?, Sherman isn't the one who initiates the fooferah, but I love that he answers with a bag of hammers, instead of a bag of marshmallows.
Bayless is a good example of why Sherman lashes back against the disrespectors.
You can spend your time ducking around corners, and cowering to avoid the school bully, or when you get your craw full, you can expose them for the fools they are, that's why people are drawn to Sherman.

Amen.

I think it is more like 13% coaching, 22% preparation, 15% mental, 17% physical, 13% luck, 15% skill, 5% willpower. I think they proved this on ESPN's Sport Science show.

Some people get to wound up in sports and how they do/donot affect other people.

If someone told you to stop doing that you did to do your job better you'd be bitching your damned head off about someone taking something from you.

Sherman is doing what he thinks he needs to do in order to excell in his job. So frickin what????? If you don't like what he is saying and/or you're hearing then stop reading the posts about it and stop watching/reading TV & newspapers.

This just makes you come across as a major whiner. If you haven't/can't teach your kid the difference between sports bs and character then in my opinion you're not much of a parent.

All I have to say on the subject is that you're all lucky to have me here as your role model. I'm better at life then all of you.
