Lets assume for a minute that Jordan Hill recovers in time for the Super Bowl (I know, probably wishful thinking). Can we give an injury settlement to players on IR to release them, and then sign them back to the team in time to play in the Super Bowl? Are there cap hit implications preventing it?

We did the same thing for Lemuel Jeanpierre during the regular season.

Here's a good article explaining why that isn't possible.

Thanks kid. I didn't know about the 6 week waiting period.

I'm certain that was put in to keep people from cheating the system exactly the way you had pondered. We got LJP back, because he's basically a backup center and just didn't catch on with anyone else. A guy like Hill would get picked up in a heartbeat so the odds of him making it through the waiting period (even if we had 6 weeks left) are slim to none

The 6 week add-on period only applies to those who are released with settlements, which has to occur within the first 5 days after the injury. After that, anyone released off of IR is ineligible to re-sign with the releasing team for the duration of that season.

You can't release a player who is injured without an injury settlement. It's against the CBA.
