Not talking about the Hail Mary but all game. It just looked like we were willing to give them anything they wanted in front of the defender. Also the zone scheme left their receivers wide open on a number plays with defenders coming in too late to make a play. I hope they tighten things up because if the Bengals can score that many on us then what about the good offensive teams.

Absolutely, WAY too much cushion and a blatant refusal to adjust. That being said, they only gave up 3 points the 2nd half. Plenty ugly, but got it done when it counted.

It's a feature, not a bug.

Sorry, but it's at the core of Pete's philoshophy to keep the ball in front of the defenders and if they make the catch then make the tackle with minimal YAC. The primary goal is limit big plays. They gave up a few last night, but on mostly coachable issues that can be corrected.

They've been playing that way for 10 years now, and IIRC there were only 4 years with less than 10 wins.

:Dunno:

Then how do you explain the flea flicker play and the horrific defense by Thompson at the end of the half. They let BOTH guys get behind them.

Like I said, they were mistakes that should be coachable. Believe it or not, many players do learn things and get better.

I assume you are familiar with the concept of mistakes. Our defensive style of keeping stuff in front of the defenders is entirely meant to prevent these sort of plays. However, if somebody in our secondary blows a coverage then bad stuff can happen regardless of our scheme and intent. It doesn't mean the defensive scheme that we've been having success with for 10 seasons now is faulty.

It seems like this secondary is very slow to react compared to the LOB. I remember very little RAC against the LOB. It seems opponents WRs are always running wide open against this secondary.

If you think about all the scores in the first half...

FG - Barton 4th down penalty
TD - Blown assignment
TD- Bonehead timing on Thompson

We had less mistakes and only gave a FG second half.

Yes, I'm aware of the concept of mistakes.
He looked horrible ALL GAME. At some point you have to realize that Thompson just isn't that good. The system is excellent, but the players need to be better at their job. If not, get someone else in there, period. ZERO excuse for a guy who's been in the league to just stop running and let that ball go over his head. It was a basic play. Later on he got toasted and Griffin saved his bacon.
Plenty of players will get better and improve. I just don't see Thompson magically getting better. I look forward to him proving me wrong. Please do kid...….

D was excellent in the 2nd half only giving up the 3.

The concept of conceding yards with the hope of preventing points is a great way to lose close games . They say its better to be lucky than good and yesterday they were just lucky . There are much better offenses than the Bengals on this years schedule .

I certainly wouldn't call what Pete does a prevent D. Maintaining outside leverage and keeping the action in front of the back end minimizes explosive plays given up and facilitates take a ways and invites rally to the football.

Pete may not publicly care about speaking about stats that much. But what he does pay attention to are those explosive plays and turnovers that feed the caustic ratio. It's importance can be seen in the defense, offense and special teams.

All of this works.

Run first offense, keeping the game close, an almost prevent D. But it only works on the bottom half of the teams.

Recall, the Bengals had the ball and the opportunity to drive for a score down by 1. They could not do it. It wasn't tremendous defense (save for the 1 yard stop that ended the drive). Bengals just are not a good team and will make mistakes.

Fundamentally, I have a problem with the concept of giving the ball to the other team giving them a chance to beat you. But a good % of the time this is going to work in your favor.

It won't work against the better teams and it won't work in the playoffs. But if we want to squeak into a wildcard ? It probably works when you factor in 1-2 extra wins from Wilson working his magic.

We honestly don't have the personnel to have a great defense, so this defense works but this kind of defense combined with our pathetic keep it close offense is probably not going to win us a division. Even with some of the middling strength teams in our division right now.

We are supposedly limiting the big plays and giving up the middle, making teams make long drives to score on us. But I saw a few big plays given up for a defense predicated on stopping that.

This type of defensive philosophy works great with top talent and will work with the current line-up IF there is an effort to score more on offense. 2013/2014 O needed to score 20 and you could count on winning much of the time. With this D the O will need to put up at least 24 minimum to win the same number of games.

I am not saying they are trying NOT to score but they have to adjust play calling to reduce the number of negative to 3 yard running plays. If they would just increase the passing attempts to 50-55% they will be in better shape staying away from the 3&outs, lopsided field position and TOP. It isn't a change in philosophy, it is simply a minor adjustment.

Pete said that they went into this particular game willing to give up all the underneath stuff due to lack of film on their new offense. So it wasn't a "looked like" thing, he actually said it.

Yeah, called it "rope a dope" in his post game presser.

Again, this concept is and has been the defensive philosophy since 2011. It still amazes me that people are surprised about this.

I get it but almost 400 yards of O and a 36 to 34 time of possession advantage for the Bengals is not a great or even good game for the Hawks. Yes they win but it was not fun to watch to say the least.

We won, I enjoyed it and embraced the drama. Winning ugly is common with this team, likely isn't going to change.
But it was pretty ugly. However, ugly wins count the same as blowouts.
