Whoever we lose to first there will inevitably some sort of meltdown. Hell, even if we're undefeated if a victory isn't by a large enough margin somebody's bound to freak out about it.

If we don't make the superbowl I think lots of fans will flip out. I don't think it's superbowl or bust. I really don't. Playoffs or bust, yeah. Unless we get a number 1 seed but that will be tough

We have a young franchise QB... I'm looking at it for the next 3-5 years. Maybe even longer to get this done. By that I mean raising the Lombardi. Expectations are crazy high for the seahawks this year. It seems like the only way we live up to those is if we win it all...don't know about that.

I agree wholeheartedly. I would also suggest that most of those fans are of the bandwagon variety. There's no doubt we had a huge surge in Seahawks fans after last season. Those same newbies are very likely expecting nothing short of the Lombardi, which is asburd.

We are knocking on the door, but I'm definitely not "Super Bowl or bust". I'll be bummed if we don't make it, but I also see that our window is just now opening and we have a good ride ahead.

I find it a little unsettling just how sky high people allow their expectations to go. I'm as excited about this season and it's possibilities as much as anyone. But I've watched way too much sports in my life to ever expect anything. Only 1 team wins a year. Every other fan base has their season end in disappointment. To expect anything in a professional sport is a bit nuts, IMO. Especially in a league with as much parody and instability as the NFL.

Also, I think a lot of people are glossing over just how young this team still is. We all want to think that last year was the the growing year, and the base line, and that's that for the team's development. Jerry Brewer wrote a really good article a month or so ago. Saying what if this isn't THE YEAR, but instead the year before THE YEAR? A ton of teams take a couple seasons to reach their true potential, not just one. If so, is that so terrible a thing? If you ask me, it's not in the least. But if you were to ask the general fan right now, if the Hawks don't win it all this year, it will be a colossal failure. That's a bit insane, if you ask me.

I'm not telling anyone to lower expectations at all. This team can reach the goals we all desire. But I do think a tad smidge of perspective might help folks not lose their minds in the event that our young team on the rise doesn't reach it's final goal in next to immediate fashion.

I'm a HUGE Kasey Kahne fan and he won the Pocono NASCAR race this past Sunday. After sitting down and watching that race telecast for three hours, and seeing that investment pay off with a win, well... it was fantastic. I was immediately in a great mood, slept like a baby, and Monday was one of my most productive days in a long time. By this morning, though, I'm back to my usual self and am simply, well... normal.

That said, a Seahawks win has the same effect for me but to a much greater degree. I'm instantly transported to a realm where all things are possible and life is grand. This feeling will stay with me throughout the week and although I might forget some of the details, by the following Sunday I'm still super stoked. Nothing breeds success that more potential success. It's like crack for me.

After a loss, I tend to sit at the computer reading for a few hours crying in my flat beer until the wife says "are you coming to bed?". I like to read the "meltdown" material. Partly because the reasons for the loss get detailed-out for me, and stuff that others saw (and I didn't) helps me find closure. If I can somehow gather myself into feeling like whatever the cause of the loss is know and fixable, I'm good. Regardless, I like to commiserate with y'all. It is a rite of passage.

I feel like loving this team is very much like taking wedding vows; "through sickness and in health, richer for poorer, forsaking all others, yada, yada...". To earn the right to boast or smack talk a Texans or Cowboys fan, I must endure all that occurs, good or bad. If that means subjecting myself to the bad to make the good that much more satisfying, then so be it. I have an obligation to gather the facts whether painful or exhilarating. So, go ahead and meltdown all you want after that painful loss, I'll be reading.

Yeah, I've found through the years this place is less than comforting after a loss, so I usually have a couple of stiff ones before I check in.

I expect to do more sober reading this year :th2thumbs: :thirishdrinkers:

Panther's loss...

Expectations are so high they sit atop Mt. Everest. Any slip will be disastrous. A Panther's loss would have some not simply slipping, but diving off the mountain and straight into the deepest part of the Grand Canyon. For others it will simply start an avalanche, picking up all kinds of negativity and accusations along the way.

Come the following Sunday, some at base camp will be under piles of "angsty wench" type snow. Should that happen, our saving grace will be a 49'er scarf wearing St. Bernard carrying a barrell of Harbaugh whiskey under its slobbering jowls. One taste of that nasty action will have our meldown victims warmed up on the insides so much so they'll be breathing fire by Sunday night, and hurling snowballs at their televisions and from every level of the Clink aiming for anything wearing red and gold!

May God save us all from such a calamity...

I find the above submission to be a lucid and well-thought-out post, and I enjoyed reading it thoroughly. I award full points for content, structure, and excellent use of vocabulary.

Snakeeyes007, you will post more, from now on, so that I may again be refreshed by your originality.

That is all.

Thank you, Houston. I don't see a problem with that imperative. I will attempt to bring more refreshment. :229031_cheers:

the .Net already had its meltdown when Percy got hurt.
But last year after the Detroit loss was probably the worst meltdown.

Definitely Miami. The Sherman/Browner suspensions news came down right as that game was ending.

I fully expect us to be 1-1 after the first two games... either because we suffer our road woes against Carolina or because the Niners come in our house motivated and determined and just plain lay it on us. All that said, I will go meltdown mode only if we were to start the season 0-2 which, unfortunately, is not terribly far fetched... Oh well... ready for football!

I went with Carolina.

Maybe this is just my Seattle sports fan showing but I have a part of me that is struggling to accept this team as elite. I know everything points towards it. The end of last season and the stats show it. I've just been let down so many times before once I started to believe.

I don't know this for sure but I think there is a large part of our fan base who feel the same way. I think a loss at Carolina might be more disappointing than any other potential loss the entire year. After this offseason and all the expectations put on this team and to come out and lose to the Panthers just feels wrong to me. I get that the Panthers are an up and coming team and any given sunday but the Hawks are supposed to be Super Bowl contenders. I also understand that it's week one but i think it'll sting if we start this season like that.

Exactly right, and well put... I know I am cautiously optimistic, but I'm definitely not going full homer mode (see ya in the Super Bowl!) type thing... Plus, everybody is gunning for us now and our road schedule is excruciating. I would be happy with a playoff spot again this year!

The reason why losses hurt so bad is because reactions to losses are eight times stronger than the satisfaction from a win. A study commissioned on gambling reactions found this data and it relates very well to football in my opinion. In some ways it could be worse because it is further out of our hands and we tie a part of our pride to our city which the Hawks are a big part of.

I chose other because there wasn't another option. I don't think we're going to have a meltdown... Losing is not an option.... :thirishdrinkers:
