Exactly. With all due respect to Kearly, who you know, actually knows his stuff about football unlike myself, I doubt any NFL FO cares about what the rabble is saying.

Owners are probably effected much more than GMs/coaches on this issue, yeah, I'd agree there.

There are also some positions that can't really be evaluated by stats and put a premium on reputation, namely offensive line and fullback. Good GMs wouldn't pay a guy just for his reputation, but bad GMs do it every offseason.

Also, reputation plays quite a bit into awards voting. Which I guess you could say "who cares" and I wouldn't argue, but that kind of stuff does matter to me as a fan. Richard Sherman being #50 on the top 100 and missing the pro-bowl had everything to do with players hating him on the field, and then spreading that reputation around the league. Thankfully, the press didn't catch that virus and gave him all-pro.

True. In our case, Paul Allen seems much more hands-off, thankfully. If we had Jerrah trying to play GM and such, I would almost certainly be more inclined to agree on the way that owners can be affected by fan grumbling.

I guess that I should revise my stance to admit that you have a great point when speaking about the league in general, but when it comes to our team, JS/PC and crew have already shown that they will evaluate players in their way and no one is going to sway them off their ideas of what they want for this team, and Paul Allen seems like he's going to step back and allow them to do that. It would seem that we are likely to have less of an effect than most fanbases do.

If we don't make the superbowl I think lots of fans will flip out. I don't think it's superbowl or bust. I really don't. Playoffs or bust, yeah. Unless we get a number 1 seed but that will be tough

We have a young franchise QB... I'm looking at it for the next 3-5 years. Maybe even longer to get this done. By that I mean raising the Lombardi. Expectations are crazy high for the seahawks this year. It seems like the only way we live up to those is if we win it all...don't know about that.

I have a hard time judging fellow fans for how they react to a surprising loss. We should all have a level of empathy for one another since we are on the same team fighting a common enemy. I started this site in 1998 and it never fails to surprise me how often we turn on each other when the chips are (temporarily) down. I always chalk it up to misplaced frustration. We turn on each other when we're mad. It's the facts.

Man, I don't know. Around here, it seems that after a loss, some people dedicate their every breath to not fighting the "common enemy," but instead to fighting the Seahawks players, coaching staff, front office, etc.

"Fire Bevell!"

"Cut Carpenter!"

"Wilson is the worst QB I have ever seen, and I should know because I've seen them all!"

"Red Bryant is awful and will always be awful!"

Stuff like that...

Now, I agree that a lot of this is misplaced frustration and a lot of it is venting, but I hate to see people talking crap about the Seahawks and their players - especially Seahawks FANS doing it. And while I don't think that makes them any less of a true fan, it's why I always find myself in debates/arguments with the people melting down. Their scattershot ranting is often ridiculously hyperbolic (e.g., a 3-point road loss to a solid team means "we will always and forever suck on the road and we're destined to be a 6-10 team"). And while that hyperbolic venting may make the ranting fanatic feel better, it feeds into the negativity on this board (which, frankly, doesn't need any help in that regard most of the time). I'm not for anything that makes .NET more negative, caustic, or poisonous toward the Seahawks.

But hey, that's just me.

I agree wholeheartedly. I would also suggest that most of those fans are of the bandwagon variety. There's no doubt we had a huge surge in Seahawks fans after last season. Those same newbies are very likely expecting nothing short of the Lombardi, which is asburd.

We are knocking on the door, but I'm definitely not "Super Bowl or bust". I'll be bummed if we don't make it, but I also see that our window is just now opening and we have a good ride ahead.

I still maintain that if you let a Seattle loss influence how you feel for the week, then you need therapy. I might have a bad couple of hours after a bad loss (the Falcons loss left me in a slump for about 4 or 5 hours), but the way people vent, it really makes me worry for their mental health. Not enough people can walk away and compose themselves.

Lol...good point.

Strangely, the Atlanta game didn't get me too bad. I was still very proud and it was such rarified air, it almost felt like we were playing on borrowed time...just because we were so young and exceeding expectations.

That's because sports is a place where you don't HAVE TO walk away and compose yourself.

In real life, you have to walk away and compose yourself when it comes to family problems, work problems, finances problems, landlord problems, and so forth.

You don't use sports as a vehicle for letting out that frustration, which is fine, but to some degree this is what people do with sports, an ultimately trivial thing that they are allowed to use in that fashion.

Of course, some people take it too far, but most people just need a safe thing to vent about. I think that's actually a healthy way to deal with their daily disappointments, much like running or Krav Maga or whatever is how others get out their daily disappointments and stress.

after the ATL game some dude posted a thread about he raged so hard he made his kids cry. He said hes going to try and get some professional help. Some shit like that lol cant remember exactly. It was pretty serious tho...in a funny way too...not gonna lie

Idk. That game sucked. It was so heartbreaking to come back like that only to lose. It stings for sure...worst loss in Seahawk history in terms of heart ache in my opinion. But then later that day I was like "well it was RW's rookie season"....i felt so much better

I had to go with the Panthers...first game of what to me is the most highly anticipated season in team history. But it truly will depend on the nature of the loss.

I may not post very often but I'm on this site every day, I talk hawk ball with all my friends' consistently, and when I watch TV I'm usually watching the NFL network or a game if one's on. I probably invest more time than I should on something that really doesn't have any bearing on what truly matters in life (Family, friends', health), and that's why I care so damned much. It's called passion. I'm so damn passionate about this team, and I spend so much time discussing/contemplating/researching/watching, that each loss cuts deep.

And hell, I too refuse to come on here after a loss. I turn off the TV and try and find something to do that will take my mind off of it. However, I typically find myself sneaking my way back on here after I get a good nights sleep.

But hey, I don't think we're going to have to worry about meltdowns much this season. The hawks are going at least 12-4, and any loss they MAY have, will be one in which we as fans will be able to hang our collective heads high and walk away knowing that we played a damn good game.

Go Hawks!

No way will .NET get past the preseason without a meltdown.

Yep. Not a chance we get to Game One without a bunch of folks getting bent out of shape and ejaculating their emotions all over the internet and the neighborhood, all because Player X was cut, or Player Y didn't play to expectations, or even that we lose a preseason game that doesn't even count in the standings. With expectations as high as they are, we're primed for it.

Scott Schrader at Fighton247 instituted a 24-hr rule last year, as in if the team loses or whatever, you get 24 hours to vent. After that you need to chill and stop bringing the board down with negativity. Obviously we still had some negative threads, but it did seem to curb the worst of the "we suck, the sky is falling, fire everyone" type of posts once that 24 hours passed.

I think I'm going to printscreen a lot of pages this year so that I can bring them up this time next year.

There were meltdowns all over the place in games like the first quarter of the Bears game when we went a TD down, then in the 2nd quarter of the Rams game when we weren't 2 TDs ahead.

OK fair enough you can get your knickers in a twist after a hard fought loss (I've never quite understood that, only 2 teams in history have gone through the regular season unbeaten, and anything more than 14 wins is rare, a few losses should be expected, you can't expect players to be at their best 100% of the time, it's not physically possible in such a gruelling sport, particularly for a team that has to travel a lot and play in varying timezones), but to start melting down because we're not going out there and scoring every time we touch the ball is just cringeworthy to watch
