BYRON MURPHY II, our prized rookie DT was ranked 5 out of 14 DTs drafted in 2024. He was graded poorly at 56.4 against the Bear when lined up mostly against Jake Curhan who probably will not have a job in the league next year.

What's up with PFF? Luckily dot net has him much higher!Screenshot 2024 12 31 08 35 00 22 40deb401b9ffe8e1df2f1cc5ba480b12

I'm still down with the pick. I just to see more added to the IDL. The way our season went we probably should have picked Zach Frazier and Dominick Puni with our first two picks.. but hindsight and all that.

I watch PFF's content fairly often to get general opinions about other teams and players. The main problem with their scores is that fans interpret them as something they are not.

Listen to their explanation of the Vikings/Seahawks scores last week and you'll hear them provide context to Geno's grade of 67 in that game. They go on to say that was a great score for Geno considering how terrible the OL played. The problem is that's not what their "grades" mean to the general populace, where people assume they are comparative ratings indicative of how good players are. PFF does share blame in that they don't try to correct that perception because they know that's what fans are actually interested in.

What PFF means by grade is just "how good did the player look" and their scores are purely outcome based.

I’ve seen two different scouting/film channels break down Murphy this year and they think he’s making an impact already. They completely disagree with the PFF grade. Food for thought

He was really noticeable before he missed a few games with injury (3 games- hamstring). He either is still hurting (probably reasonable expectation with hamstiring) or opponents had the opportunity to gameplan for him better as time went on ... or a combination of both. A rookie DT is generally overmatched moving to the NFL. Flashes of success is really all you can hope for (in a rookie). The first off-season will show if he's learning and training like a pro or relying solely on athletic ability. He's either going to take a big step forward in his second year, or he's going to plateau and be "who he is". I would hope and expect that Leonard Williams' impact will have a big influence on that projection. At this point, the world is his oyster but he has work to do ........

Frankly, Murphy will have a larger impact on the team's success than solely his position. The high draft pick for him last year and the lackluster production on Offense during the season really points toward a higher investment in Offense this off-season. If the interior OL is as high a priority in the Front Office as it is here on .net, the D will likely have to improve without a lot of investment. EJones will (hopefully) be the focus and might be the only big contract on D. (Am I forgetting anyone?) Hopefully there's some luck on late picks or UDFAs but Murhpy's progress and EJones' growth under MMac may need to make up for the relatively poor performing Secondary.

There's only so much money/picks to spread around and the Offense should be getting the vast majority this off-season. IOL(3-5), replace TLockett (1), TE (1), RB pipeline, QB pipeline...

Don't give a rip about PFF, what I see is a dude that changes the defense.

Without looking into it (eyeball test) the defense goes from bad to good with him in the line-up. Last year Seattle's DEF was terrible, now it's top tier. When he was out with injury, the defense sucked, he comes back and things start clicking again.

Dude is a cornerstone piece and is only going to get better. Donald comp? No (give him a year or two), but he's already a difference maker on the field.

The question is what did this kid learn this year and how is he going to use that knowledge towards next year

Opinion:

The gross misuse and abuse of statistics have long since reach epidemic levels globally in virtually all fields. It plagues global narratives.

Murphy plays for the Seahawks. Not for PFF or any other entertainment site.

That site will have no bearing on Byron Murphy's evolving development.

Watch the film. That's not a construct. It's a real recording. Watch it frame by frame and catch all the details. There are enlightening details about line play that are often missed at full speed by eyes glued to the football.

With Murphy, the best is yet to come.

I dunno. Seems to work just fine for the pharmaceutical companies.

The joy of building a team with young players, fans defend those young players based on HOPE, hoping that the player will develop, hoping that the player just needed more touches, hoping it was just bad coaching, hope and more hope.

We need to draft a QB, that will keep fans happy for a few years.

Sometimes these big interior linemen just need time to mature into their large frames, get the right kind of conditioning on a consistent, year round basis, get stronger, a better muscle/fat ratio. The guy recently turned 22. I don't see anything to be concerned about yet.

Some don't but most would need time to develop.
