Opened with injury news
Both Britt and McDaniel are "sore" and they will see. Said they hope to get Britt some work today and it sounded like McDaniel maybe tomorrow
On what he looks for in receivers....said he looks for unique qualities. Receivers come in all shapes and sizes. Look for tough guys who battle and will compete they way they want them too.
On lack of individual awards for players, coaches and executives....said he doesn't have that sense for himself....said John has done an incredible job from the beginning. Said he works tirelessly to find guys to compete. Said he doesn't know how he couldn't be recognized. Listed off guys like Sweezy and Irvin as examples of guys he brought in that have stood out that others wouldn't have made.
on every week being a championship mentality....There's a thought behind that....we don't talk about rivals, matchups and tv opportunities. Said he doesn't want his guys to think that any game is more or less important than any other. He wants guys to give their absolute max every practice, every game. He said when they do that every day, then games like this one coming up are normal for them. Said that consistency will tell a story when you look back.
More on John...said he's so smart and is able to handle stuff without being phased by it. It all came across and is why they hired him. Said after the interview, they'd already had a call in for him before he got home.
Asked if he was looking for pushback from John to challenge him....Absolutely. He wanted someone with an abundance of ideas and input. Said John is like that too, said it's a blast for them to work their way through any issues. Said they trust that they will always come to a point where they agree.
On Clay Matthews....said he comes from a great SC family. Dad and Uncle were all americans. Said Clay came in at 208 lbs and didn't play really well. In his jr year called him a great special teams player. In his senior year he was given an opportunity and when he got on the field to play, he was a great player from the first moment. Said he should have figured that out sooner than he did.
Said defensively he looks for tall guys with long arm spans who run really fast. In the safety position he's got to coach a lot of different types.
Asked if he builds based on a middle out philosophy. he said that's a great thought but that's not what he does.
On Johnson. Said his arm is still in a brace and needs to show more flexibility with it before he can say he'll play. He'll practice again today.
Gave John props for finding guys like Burley and Moeaki to come in here and be able to play well and fit in right away.
On Wilson saying he thinks the team is stronger for going through early season struggles. Said he believes that is true and added that he always agrees with Russell.
Said it's not so much on having issues, because everyone has issues, but it's how you come out of those issues and that comes back to having the right mentality.
Reminded them that John was the guy that started pushing Wilson while he was playing at Wisconsin. Said he fell in love with Russell after John showed Russell to Pete.
That's it for today from Pete. Looks like there will be some player ones for those who want to listen. Pete should be back tomorrow.
