Patchwork O-line vs. Indy Front 7

Anyone have any scouting reports on the Indy front 7? I can only name one guy, Robert Mathis, off the top of my head. What is their pass rush like? Do they have a Watt-Cushing-like combo that can stack the line and run multiple stunts? If so, Carp and Sweezy are gonna get crushed again. This is a critical matchup IMO this week- if the line can protect and give RW some time to throw we should have much better success on offense this week, which should put less pressure on our defense to essentially be flawless. I'm sure the new patchwork O-line will be a little better this week after a game under their belts, but how much weaker is the Indy front 7 compared to Houston's?

Well they looked pretty good against everyone else they played.

Frankly after last week it could hardly get much worse, but I doubt it will be much better since we aren't exactly trotting worldbeaters out there on the line.

Hopefully Wilson can stay healthy through the meatgrinder of however long it is until we get our injured starters back. What is the timetable on that anyway?

Mathis has more than half of the team's 13 sacks. Not a lot of pocket push, they do blitz some, which I would expect to increase after they see what Houston did.

Wow, Mathis has 7.5 sacks already? Dang....

So I guess we'll be rolling RW away from him a lot on passes, though running read-option right at him might not be a bad idea....

Indy's defensive stats are impressive. They're right up there with us. This could be another low scoring game decided by a FG late.

Well at least the line has 1 full game together.....

You see Largent, the line is like a hand, a hand with five fingers, and they all must work together. We cannot fix the line via top round draft picks or free agent acquisitions (although we did exactly that with the D-line), but must give them time to grow and nourish themselves. You cannot rush these things and in the mean time we should content ourselves with the fact that they can run block, but that their pass blocking could get our prized QB injured any moment now. :sarcasm_off:

They are no better than Carolina, SF, or Texans so what's the worry? matter of fact they're not as good as any of those we've already faced. bring it on Indy....

They picked up Francois and Franklin from the 49ers this past offseason. Houston's front 7 is 100 times better than the Colts. Mathis is their only pass rush threat now that Freeney is gone.

Not true. Redding and Moala are 7th and 8th respectively in pass rush productivity for 34 DEs. Redding is 9th overall among interior D-lineman in general.

Also, Freeman (our ILB) has shown ability to rush the passer this season when he's blitzed. I think he has something like 3.5 sacks already this season.

Dustin, you would probably know about the Indy front line better than any of us. Can you give us a scouting report? I'm very interested to know how you guys got so much pressure on Kaepernick a few weeks ago. SF has one of the best offensive lines in the NFL and Colin was having a tough day. Was it scheme or simply talent?

It was mostly our coverage on the back end. As you know San Fran's WR core is decimated by injuries. We basically double teamed Boldin all game and just jammed their other wrs at the line. They were pretty much unable to create separation all game which gave our D-line plenty of opportunities to get to Kaepernick. We left our ILB Freeman in as a spy on CK to stop him from taking off.

As for the talent on the line, Redding is probably our best D-lineman right now. With the addition of a true NT (Franklin) he's getting much more favorable matchups. Our NT Franklin seems to be inconsistent this year tho. He was pretty much a non-factor vs the Dolphins, but has had very good games these last 2 weeks. RJF is our best run defender and is decent as a pass rusher. He likely won't play this week so Moala (who I mentioned in a previous post) is going to get the start. I'm still not completely sold on his game this year as he played very poorly last season so it remains to be seen whether or not he's actually improved or if his last few games are just an anomaly.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Dustin for the info and corrections. Are you talking about Cory Redding? He was a Seahawk at one time and did jack squat. It seems he may be producing for the Colts though.

Yep, Cory Redding. He was pretty good last year, but he made a huge jump so far this year.

Kinda wish the Hawks would bring in Walter Jones to coach up Bowie 'til Breno gets back. In fact, how 'bout we bring him in to coach up Breno when HE gets back! Can we get Walter off his fishin' boat for a few weeks? :)

Colts run defense doesn't rate too high. I think that's where our strength meets their weakness.

Corey Redding is a strange dude, he has talent, and talks a lot on the sideline but I think he gets lazy.

In Detroit he did well because he was playing next to Shaun Rogers who was an absolute freak so he got a huge contract and fell off. He ended up at Seattle and would make a play once in a while but not consistently so they didn't resign him.

Then he goes to Baltimore who didn't find him worth retaining either. Now I think he knows it's getting towards the end and needs to play well for one last contract.

Front 7's: Texans > Niners > Panthers >> Colts >> Jaguars

The only reason the Colts front 7 scares me a little is because we'll probably have 2 or 3 backups in again. Like many have said, Mathis is the only major threat. We should be able to run all over them with Beast Mode. I hope that and some QB scrambling opens up the passing game and eases the pressure on Wilson.

If that were the case he would still be a Seahawk.
