OK, keep up the OL discussion, we were quite optimistic about the OL 2024, the addition of Fant, who was starting LT and RT for different teams; Tomlinson, a pro-bowler; and Connor Williams, one of the highly ranked C on PFF, injected a lot of hope. Too bad that was injured, Tomlinson was our best guard, but isn't the future, Connor was the biggest disappointment, he quitted on us.

This season, is the second season Schneider's been in total control. This is likely the starting lineup:

LT - Cross: The best of what we have, but I often critizie him for subpar anchoring, his butt was often a foot or so from Geno as he was pushed towards Geno, and didn't have the strength to be away from Geno.

LG - open for competition, Haynes? Zabel? Probably Zabel, so the question would be how much better Zabel over Tomlinson in his rookie season? Tomlinson was 62 overall, 65 pass blocking, 59.7 run blocking, or 66th out of 136 guards.

C - Olu? Zabel? Olu (64 overall, 54.8 pass blk, 65.8 run blk) was kind of ok, but not inspiring. Sundell?

RG - Bradford? Haynes? Both didn't excel in 2024

RT - Lucas, he was below average in 2024.

What is your opinion on our 2025 OL? I am totally fired up, liking an OL filled with players drafted by the Hawks. Schneider didn't sign any veteran IOL in the free agent period, he was confident about the line, didn't feel the need to invest big $$$.

Do you ever initiate posts that aren't just total sarcasm?

Having Williams quitted on us was quited disappointing. No one saw that coming.

They need to sign a FA vet RG to help this OL transition & give the young guys time to get their feet under them.
17 games is a long season and injuries change things quickly.
RG Brandon Scherff is 33 & maybe not a perfect WZ guy but he had a top-15 pass block win rate in 24' and is a great run blocker.

There are still about 20 IOL FA's out there and around 15 OT FA's. None are an upgrade? We have cap room.
Keeping Abe Lucas healthy & on the field is key for us. Maybe we should move Lucas to RG if it protects him better?

I really want to see OL improvement and watch a dominant run game for once.

Desperate times.
Go get Ryan Hunter from the Toronto Argonauts or Dejon Allen from the BC Lions.

A veteran would be ideal but at the same time the issue is they like A lot of their young O linemen. Need to give them time to develop. They already can't keep them all, you add someone and there's another one you can't keep on top of that. JS might feel stuck between a rock and a hard place with that one. The vet would be nice if there wasn't a lot of youth they like. Would the tradeoff be worth it? I'm sure they have looked at that with what's available and decided no, not at this time.

Yeah, that's one way to look at it, (they like a lot of their young O lineman).
More like JS doesn't want to admit his mid-late round OL picks are subpar and the coaches feel like they can work miracles. That statement isn't a knock on JS or his coaches, not at all. It's damn tough to find & develop OL from the college ranks these days.

At some point you have to admit your offensive line has been at the bottom for 8 years and your development plan is behind schedule. If Bradford & Haynes don't show in camp they should be on the bubble. I sure don't think having a couple of day 3 OL rookies who 'might' have potential should prevent us from snagging a 30something vet RG who instantly upgrades this horrific OLine.
As far as potential young OL talent being lost from the roster, come on really.
Carry 10. Make the tough calls, stash them on the practice squad, they'll likely be safe. Throw a couple phone #'s in the desk drawer for a call around Thanksgiving. Let Benton make the call, it's his baby.

If this is their mindset as you suggest Matt, then I think that is the problem we are facing.

KC has rebuilt their line every 4 years or so. This needs to be our new world view. It's a reality of today's nfl. John is skimpy on oline. Figures it's better spent on defense or something. Mike has to shape the future of it. With that. I will say a qb with faster decision making makes an oline look so much better....as does a quality FA.

I'm not convinced Haynes even makes the team. He's beyond terrible.

Hutch has an oddly generic job title of "football consultant", so I'm not sure what it is he really does. Regardless, a protest would be a tough pill for him to swallow.

Smart teams know when to cut the cord. Haynes is dead weight.

Took everyone much less time to write off Howell.

For this OL to be it's best they need Lucas to stay healthy, Haynes to take the RG spot and Olu/Sundell to make a big jump from last year.
Olu's knock has been his power, right? Maybe this scheme fits him better. For a guy with so many accolades coming out of college, I really thought Olu would be the center for a long time. Hopefully a new scheme and vet coaches help him take a big step forward.
Sundell surprised last year and certainly could take the center spot away from Olu. The new scheme seems more tailored to his talents than last year.
I know one thing, the depth of the OL is only getting better with internal growth and not having Stone Forsythe on the depth chart.
Cab and Rich have potential to be average backups.
Bradford seems physically incapable of fitting this scheme.
I think Lucas having missed so much time affected his play last year and I expect him to get back to where he was as a rookie.
Cross will be better with another year of experience and strengthening.
I don't expect a huge jump from last year, but I like the direction of the OL now.
I also think having a legit FB (Ouzts is an animal) will be a big difference maker and am very surprised his addition isn't getting more love.
I think the optimism for the OL is legit this year. Before, it seemed more like desperate hoping. Now, I think the FO has made a couple moves that will only improve their performance.
