Is it me or does our Defense look better with Okada playing instead of Coby at SS? A lot fewer missed tackles. With Bryant being a FA next year, i’d rather pay Okada instead.
I think it might be a little more situational than pure skill. But I do agree it looks a lot better with Okada

Very curious to see what Mike MacDonald and the coaching staff does vs. the 49ers and throughout the playoffs at the safety position.

Considering how they handled the Jalen Sundell vs. Olu situation, they will probably resume with Coby Bryant as the starter w/ rotating Okada in situationally, but I'm afraid Okada is more productive and that may not be the best move, although I do trust the coaching staff.

Okada has shown to be a much better/more physical tackler, ultimately has been in great position and making plays very consistently.

Coby Bryant has made some big plays in coverage and has more experience and is a leader, but I can't be the only one that feels more confident in Okada right now

You hate to lose a guy like Coby, who seems like a glue guy, team player, and is always around the ball, but given our free agent situation, and our personnel and depth at his position, it's unlikely it'll be in ours or his best interest to re-sign. If he goes out and doesn't get an offer he likes, I'd be thrilled if he wanted to come back for a year to establish more FA value.

Both are solid players but still think Bryant is slightly better. I've seen some Okada miss tackles this season as well. Bryant also has a knack for forcing fumbles... hope to see more of that soon.

Most Xs and Os breakdowns I've seen, say the opposite. But Okada has made his share of plays, no doubt.

Right now, I think I'd give Okada the edge, because of the Bryant rust factor. He's physically fresher, of course, but he's been out of the game for a while. I'd be OK with activating him and getting him involved on a bit of a snap count until he's up to speed with the rest of the D.

Funny to see this because a buddy and I were just having this same convo. I like Coby but I think he lacks in Tackling and coverage. When I feel Okada is more coverage and tackling type player. Bryant does seem to get luck with his Picks but I don't want my SS to be a high pick person I want him more down in the bock tackling.

The thing that Bryant offers is the ability to play single high in cover 3 and cover 1. Right now with him out, Love is probably doing this role. He does it fine but I think Bryant is probably better than Love in this role.

Okada is playing out of his mind. He is still limited but Mac doesn't ask him to do things he can't.

I like Bryant but there are quite a few safeties I love in this draft class that can play quarters/quarters and single high.

This is where the discussion needs to go IMO. It’s not about Bryant vs Okada. Both can start on most teams in the league. It’s about 2 points:
1. What safety tandem provides the best scheme fit.
2. What financial considerations need to be made.

On #1, Love probably belongs on the field all the time when healthy. But there are scenarios where Bryant or Okuda fit the scheme better than the other. Honestly, a luxury issue to have.

On #2, fortunately and unfortunately, Bryant has played himself into a larger contract than the hawks can afford with the upcoming resigning needs. Couple that with the comp pick that will come and draft prospects/FA’s that could be groomed, it may be inevitable. For someone who wanted Bryant gone after Pete’s last year, I did a 180 after MM’s mentoring and would love to find a way to keep him. JS has worked magic before…but my gut says Bryant will be the talented player they have to cull to keep the core intact.

Bryant vs Okada straight up isn’t a great discussion. Kinda like Zep vs PF…both great in different ways. Where they fit into the 2026 team is interesting.

Yes.

I think the discussion needs to be more comprehensive than just who is better. Other talking points.

1) The Seahawks should probably start building up their safety room again. Love is only contracted for 1 more season in 2027. He'll be close to 30 years old. There will be a lot of reasons not to re-sign him.

2) The Seahawks are rarely in cover 1 situations. They don't do this very often. I don't think you need a true FS like Earl Thomas. Even Coby isn't a true center fielder. He does it well but he isn't elite at it. You don't need someone that is. You need someone that knows their assignments and does it to a good level (i.e Bryant, Love, etc).

3) Ty Okada is going to be 27 years old all of next season. He is guaranteed to be back as a RFA. You might be business-savvy to re-sign to a small 2 year deal that shouldn't break the bank. Consider him your draft hedge.

4) This year's draft class gets me really excited for some very Mike Macdonald type of safeties. They need to be smart, assignment-sound, and fire down-hill quickly. Dillon Thieneman, Genesis Smith, Louis Moore all do this at a very high level. You can probably find them in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th rounds respectively. I personally am all over Genesis Smith. He screams Mike Macdonald to me. He moves around very similarly to Julian Love. Heady dude that does a little bit of everything.

5) Don't forget reclamation projects. Veteran guys that are 25-26 years old seeking a new chance so they can make money on a 2nd contract. Mac knows what he's doing on defense. Safeties are always productive in his defense. It's attractive and it's an elite destination for dudes.

Bryant is better when healthy hands down. He is much more physical and forces alot of turn overs. Okada is the type of player who needs to generate some speed in order to make a tackle with force. Wish we could've extended Colby this season for another 2 years.
