You know who looks like the idiot when two strangers pass each other and the first yells at the second about how awesome his team is? Not the first guy. I mean, I've met some people wearing other teams' clothes, and at the end of the conversation, I might say Go Seahawks, but that's after I give them a chance to realize I'm not a (complete) dillweed.

My goal is to always represent our team with dignity, class and respect ...

But I always say the same thing, "Hey nice hat" ... and then, with a smile, I point to my Seahawks hat (which I'm always wearing) and then I wait to see their reaction which I use as a gauge to see if they're in the mood to talk.

Usually I'm met with well intended comments / smack / etc. I always say nice things about their team and the positives they are exhibiting on the field, players I like on their squad, etc. Rarely are people aggressive or total D-bags but it happens once in a while. (see story below)

Something to consider with all this though is that I live in Eugene, Oregon and people here are pretty mellow. I see alot of different loyalties here and I try and engage a fellow fan and I always have positive things to say about their team because I try and keep up on all NFL stuff. People are cool 95% of the time ...

However ...

I went to SoCal last summer with my wife and kids and Niner fans were much more aggressive and douchey on the average when I made my standard "nice hat" comment. I had one guy actually stop and want to fight about it, no joke, right in front of my little kids.

So I guess the closer you get to the epicenter of a fan base, the more douchey they get, IMO.

How about buying the guy a beer because you both love football and both teams play the kind of physical football that fans in both cities are growing to love?!? Or just because you respect what each team has done, clawing out of the crater and building a physical dominant team to put the NFC West atop the NFL?

The 49er hate is weird.

We both a physical team that likes to run the ball and so do we. We both have a team that has a lot of physical players with a standout core (their DE and LB, and our secondary and LB) in the defense that dictates play to the offense.

We both have ex-college coaches that succeeded by taking a college team in the doldrums and turning them almost into bullies. We both have coaches that tend to be animated and outspoken.

And we really don't have a lot of history with the 49ers being the reason we did not move on in the playoffs anyway. I could see if they were a team that constantly knocked us out of the playoffs like we do to the Skins. But we lost to Atlanta, not to the 49ers. They beat Atlanta and we didn't. And we "hate" them for that?

The 49ers do have a lot of overly moronic, overly confrontational fans. That is a good reason not to like some of their fan base. It is not a good reason to be overly moronic, overly confrontational as well.

Right now they are probably the favorite for the SB for the NFC, maybe you can hate that. But just remember when you are walking downtown with Seahawks gear on and some *sshat screams "Niners Rule!" at you - who looks like the moron? Don't make us look like that kind of fan base.

I don't want the 49ers to win too much because we need the throne they are sitting in (as past NFC champion). We still have to catch them, but that is on us - not a reason to hate them. Their recent success has not even come at our expense!

If they were in a different conference they would absolutely be my second favorite team to watch, because they play almost the exact kind of football we are being conditioned to enjoy.

I would tell him I admire his tenacity. He obviously became a fan when the non-salary cap era was in effect and hasn't enjoyed much success in the last decade until last season. Post Montana / Young the 9ers boast the same Superbowl record as the Hawks, but they don't have nearly as many NFC-W division winning seasons as we do.

Can we stop being so insecure around their fanbase?

I flew to New Zealand for a couple weeks in February and flew out of LAX the day of the Super Bowl rocking my 12th man jersey. I didn't receive any haggling at the airport other than a couple TSA agents saying something along the lines of "man, why you got to where that here today?"

I just laughed and said I had to wear my teams colors. If I saw someone wearing a rival's colors at SeaTac I'd probably say something along the lines of what Radish said. Try to poke a little fun and stir up some good conversation.

Had a 49'er fan at yell "go 9'ers" at the McCarren airport in Vegas ( I was wearing my Earl Thomas jersey) I quickly shot back "42-13", his response <crickets> .....

I'm not sure what it with the Niners and their fan base but, I don't remember the hatred/rivalry being so tense when the Rams were our biggest foe in the Hass/Alexander days. Anybody remember differently?

I never "confront" any opposing fans. It is a sport for crying out loud. If they are douches, so be it. I'm a Dodger fan and one of the best converstaions I've had with a stranger was with a Giant fan in Sea-Tac watching the all star game having a beer.

I was at the Dodger - Giant game a few weeks ago. I was in full Seahawk regalia. There was a group of Giant fans with jerseys that said "Beat L.A." on the back. As their team was getting its asses handed to them, the Giant fans beat a hasty retreat.


I was on the top row as as they exited the tunnel, I gave them my game day voice with NINERS SUCK, as the source of my bellowing.

I know it was a baseball game but chances are, if they like the Giants, they like the 9ers.

I look forward to hating the Rams again. Yes, the intensity was just as great back then, but we didn't have as much access to each other. Most sites didn't even have blogs back then.
