The way the defense played yesterday proved to me that the defensive struggles of the past couple of seasons weren't due to a player talent problem.
For the most part the game was relativity penalty free. The refs let them play. I thought this game would be a flag fest.

Bobo had a pedestrian game. A lot of passes he normally catches that he missed.

I wasn't impressed with PJ Walker. There was a sure pick 6 dropped by the Chargers on one of his throws. Therefore the saying "it's better to be lucky than good" fits here.

Offense
I thought PJ looked really good after the initial miscues. Multiple bullets to move the chains and 2 awewome passes that should have been caught (sideline throw on the run to the TE & the endzone drop). That being said, Howell had a really nice game and showed great control of the O.
Olu gets stuffed on the goal line. I pray Williams is healthy as C is showing as a weak link.
Laken Tomlinson had some decent plays, but got beat too much.
Haynes pushed his guy 5 yards back multiple times, but was also in on the goal line stuff. I want to re-watch that series of plays.
TE & WR all played decent games. It's eery to see Russel playing as he moves so much like Parkinson with the hair to boot (although in a slightly smaller frame). JSN should have played less. He is going to be a weapon we don't want to risk too much in pre-season. My early WR prediction: Locks (DK, Lockett, JSN, Bobo) Young, Shenault. White/Winston to the PS (if they make it). Eskridge as likely odd man out.
RB's are stacked. I remember watching highlights of Mcintosh in college and thinking "why didn't he get drafted by the 3rd". He played a really nice game last night. Holani really surprised me...the kid is skilled.

So nice seeing tackles being made last night!!!!
Murphy showed strong in his debut. Our D-line is near the top in the league IMHO. All we are missing is that Bosa type DE. Not sure another team has the interior depth we have. The Chargers were stuffed for just about anything they tried inside. Pressure was really good most of the game and the LA QB's felt that pressure.
However, our DE's are still really good. Mafe/Hall all had nice games. It sounds like MM has plans for Dre'mont Jones and Mike Morris has the versatility to play interior and DE. He played well last night. I posted last night I think Taylor is toast. Time to cut bait.
Like our interior line, our secondary is showing tremendous depth. Burns played well, Woolen looked like his rookie self and Okada certainly at his wheaties before the game. Bryant had a pick and almost another. I've said he's on the bubble and probably still is...but I'm not rooting for him to go (unlike Taylor or Eskridge). He will need to show better consistency and skill at safety, including tackling. With Blair and Reed eventually in the mix, Bryant will have competition.
Special Teams
We have the best punter in the league, hands down.
Myers...please break the pattern and make this a good year.
We gave up too many yards on KO returns and didn't get many on our own. The new rules are strange to watch and hope they can get that part dialed in. Having the KO team just stand there when the ball is kicked is so odd.

The Charger's Offense is much more dependent on Justin Herbert than Seahawk's O on Geno. Seahawks D was basically the same as starters in regular season. Jerome Baker only difference? In essence, Seahawks #1 D looked good against Chargers #2 Offense. That's good, but probably shouldn't be expected to mean much except to predict a few roster spots.

One guy I was paying particular attention to was Derrick Hall. His stats weren't overly crazy, but he was successful in applying consistent pressure to the quarterback while setting the edge. Fingers crossed that he can have a year two jump in production similar to Mafe.

How many years will people continue to beat these drums? theres still people who want to "see more of geno" lol. And Seattle's D wasn't basically its starters... do you have access to that final 53 man roster?

Well, I wouldn't jump to that conclusion based on one preseason game. If the trend continues into the regular season, then yes.
I noticed the lack of penalties, too. 6 accepted flags on us, 3 on the Bolts. You would think that there would be more in a first preseason game, especially two teams with new coaching staffs.

Murphy already attracting triple teams in a preseason game, guys are going to be able to make a lot of plays around him. Remember, he is tying up three guys, so he won't have a lot of sacks or tackles many times before you start calling him a bust, you know who you are......
Goal line offense, I think it was a point to make, both in if we were successful and or failed. Failing they have a facet of the game they need to evaluate and challenge the guys about going forward as well as identify what will work and who would be the personnel grouping or blocking assignments next time.
This is a pride thing for O lineman and RB, I am pretty sure we see this again in a given situation and betting with a better outcome looking at the rest of the teams attention to fixing issues from last year.

I don’t see it as much of a diversion as a let’s see if our offensive line can do what needs to be done. They couldn’t. These were mostly just backups so it doesn’t mean we can’t when it counts but it does tell us where we need more work with the guys on the field that particular drive. I’m not as worried about the scores or lack there if in preseason games so I wanted them to do it just like they did.

Guys who could be on the bubble that I'm rooting for to stick are Blaire, Reed III (those two are Kam style killers), and Holani as an RB. I'm NOT rooting against Macintosh. He hasn't had a fair chance to show what he's got. Hope we can keep em both.

I love the lack of penalties and general lack of chaos, especially for the first preseason game. I know there was at one delay of game penalties, but there didn't seem to be that constant scramble to get the ball snapped on time.
I had really gotten to hate all the flags this team was taking and the immediate cut to Pete with the disbelieving look on his face.

We have to keep in mind that the Chargers drew half the flags that we did, so it might just be a case of that crew letting them play. Nevertheless, you have a valid point, particularly as it pertains to pre-snap penalties, which usually aren't the result of the crew letting them play. A false start or neutral zone infraction will draw a flag from any crew.

walker is a 3rd string Qb, I'll leave it at that. I thought Howell looked really good. A few ill-advised throws but otherwise a solid outing. O line still a work in progress and missing starters. D was refreshing to watch. God, please let this be how things progress into the real games. I've been subject to SO much bad defense in the last 8 years, I just can't watch any more.

That's how I felt. It was the first time since the LOB years that I saw guys flying around out there. I really liked what I saw from our defense.
But I have to keep telling myself that this is just the preseason, and we weren't playing against the best competition.

I have 2 thoughts...
1. It was nice to see KMac doing well with the snaps he had, reports were that he wasn't showing anything in TC, so I'm glad that wasn't the case today.
2. I couldn't help but feel that the D played with a rejuvenated swagger, haven't seen that in quite some time.

All new coaching staff, so we don't have any history to base opinions on. Most teams keep 4, I think, but they all do tradeoffs between RBs, WRs, and TEs. Holani and MacIntosh both did pretty well. So I guess I'm on the keep 4 RBs team, but that might cost us a WR or TE.
