So the year started with very conservative playcalling. RW was only slinging it when we needed it in the last 2 minutes. Then the game opened up a bit and the long ball was part of the game - SF game, NE game etc. Then came the Chicago game and suddenly the Read-option was the go to play. It works great and we have three straight wins (I know AZ game wasn't won by offense but only those of us that saw the game knows that).
So what is the next step? I haven't really seen much of the read option plus sling it game approach. There was a little bit of that in the Chicago game with some 20 yard passes but not much of the 40 yard passing approach that was used to win the NE game.
Do we think that is going to be added?
Now to the 49ers game perspective on this. NE ran up 28 straight points when they went no-huddle. This wasn't the Peyton Manning style of no-huddle where everyone gets to the line and then for the next 25 second Manning stands there and changes things the way he wants it. This was Oregon style no-huddle. This was play after play quickly put together keep the defense on the field get them tired.
Yesterday a thread was made about SF playing a lot of snaps in NE and they should be a bit tired. So if we start out with read option to keep drives going and just churn away small yards but keep moving the chains we should get the number of snaps up on SF defense. Then in the second half as they start getting tired - pedal to the metal. No-huddle speed offense. Mix read option with deep downfield passes then I simply don't think the 49ers will have enough in the tank to keep up.
