So are rookies forced to sign long contracts? And I think this has already been established but if a rookie refuses to sign with team that drafts him does he become a free agent or does he have to go back to the draft?

No. Rookies who refuse to sign do not become free agents. They can sit out a year and reenter the draft if the team retains their rights, but even then they're not completely free of the team that drafted them.

The only reason the NFL owners get away with any of this stuff as a monopoly is because the players have a union. But even then, the owners have the upper hand in all negotiations as the union and owners come to a collective bargaining agreement.

Dak Prescott is the highest paid player in NFL history.
Jordan Love and Trevor Lawrence are tied with Joe Burrow and Josh Allen at $55 million a year. Tua is just below them at 53.1 million a year.

I don't know how you can make the statement you did with a straight face. Whichever starting QB signs next will be in the top three paid, regardless of skill level. QB pay structure is definitely a problem.
Lawrence has never been paid $55M or more in any year in the NFL. If he sees out his contract in 2030 he still won't have been paid $55M or more in any NFL year. It's a completely bullshit number. I don't want to be snarky with you or anyone else, but if someone uses that garbage to make a point, then they probably don't have a point.

Trevor Lawrence pay:
2024 $39M
2025 $37.5M
2026 $37.5M
2027 $41.5M
2028 $46.5M
2029 $50.5M
2030 $53.841M

$55M per year average? lmao.

...and again, the reason QB pay is so high is because pay at the bottom end has gone up by a much lower percentage than the increase in the salary cap. If minimum pay was linked to the increase in salary cap then teams wouldn't be spending so much cash on the top players.

If a player refuses to sign with a team, that team loses all rights to them when the subsequent draft starts. They can of course trade the rights to the player all the way up until that point (which is how we acquired Kelly Stouffer from the Cardinals). The original drafting team retains no rights and receives no compensation once the next draft begins.

I seem to remember that the same team cannot draft that player again, but I can't find documentation of that. I'm not sure why they would want to if they wasted a pick the previous year.

I didn't do a good job of explaining it. Tired.

You're not accounting for his signing bonus, which is figured into the average.

So theoretically could a great player enter the draft and say he will refuse to sign with any team that drafts him, then find himself an undrafted rookie and circumvent the contract outlines for rookies and then sign wherever and for however much he wants?

I suppose something like that is possible, but there are still limitations in the CBA as to what a team is allowed to compensate a UDFA player. But the thought that a talented player would go through seven rounds without anyone drafting them is kind of in the if-pigs-could-fly category.

There have been a couple of high profile players who've threatened not to sign with a particular team that might draft them.

Lots of wrong opinions in this conversation.

Is what it is.

Now that there is ZERO CHANCE Parsons becomes a Seahawk in the near future, this thread will be moved to the appropriate sub forum.
