the Seahawks need him back they can survive without Breno and R. Okung for a while but they need Unger to be in the lineup to have a functioning offense IMO.

I think Unger is an important cog, but listening to Pete yesterday, it sounded like center was the most solid of the positions with a backup on the line Sunday. Breno will be out at least this week, likely the Titans week as well. Unger is going to practice this week, but they sounded like they were going to take it easy on him, so it's going to be interesting to see if he can make it back this week. If not I expect him back by the Titans game at the latest

On the snap infraction (where everyone started the play except Jeanpierre) I thought he did a great job of not screwing up and fumbling the ball trying to catch up with everyone. Instead he stayed in position and took the call.

I liked that. Good on ya Jeanpierre.

I think Lemuel's pretty good. Obviously be nice to have Okung back. Breno at RT the most replaceable IMO but you can't replace his ability to get in his opponents head.

On a play like that there is really no danger of fumbling because it's a dead ball foul so the instant anyone moves before he does the ball is dead and the play is over.

That would be my concern - in that split second he could have really messed up and the whistle may not have been blown. Leave no doubt!

Lemuel is about 10 times the shotgun snapper Max is. Had Max played I think there may have been a couple times where JJ would have gotten to Russell before the ball. I'm exaggerating of course, but Max really is crap at the shotgun snap.

Centers are critical and it's often not apparent when they're they're deficient because they play a role in coordinating the line and their deficiencies manifest in worse play by others. If you watch tape of Carp playing next to Unger, Carp looks mysteriously better than he did Sunday. I also don't trust Carroll on this because Carroll says a lot of things for various reasons when it comes to how well someone is playing. He said Jesse Williams looked fantastic after the first preseason game. Incidentally, PFF is basically worthless without transparency into how they grade. They said Lem didn't give up a pressure whereas I rewatched a fraction of the game last night and in one play during that fraction his man beat him instantly. Someone else got to Wilson first, but that's hiding important information if they don't count that as a pressure.

LJP was way less active in making last second adjustments/communicating with his line. I watch the C position quite a bit pre-snap, and Unger gives directions on nearly every down. LJP mostly just stared at his assignment. The experience level difference is obvious. We need our #1 guy back in there soon.

I was three sheets during that game, and mired in a sea of Texan fans, but I don't remember seeing too many blown blocking assignments.

We got beat by athleticism up front, but not necessarily ineptitude.

Jeanpierre was actually one of the more solid guys on that O-Line last week. Love to see Unger Healthy again, because I think he was hindering the offense the last few games he played.

Agreed. I think a healthy Jeanpierre was playing better than an injured Unger, and this was his first start against a better DL than we've seen yet (other than SF, where I think Unger got hurt).

I've said it before, but Unger, while very good technically, gets out-physicalled (beat up) regularly. He's a fine center to be sure (overrated by some folks around here), but the drop off between he and LJP is not significant.

All I'm saying is that the team shouldn't feel like they have to rush Unger back.

According to reports, sounds like Unger is practicing and sounds like he's planning to play this week. As always, I'll wait til Friday's report to get a better feel of the actual chances of that happening

Really? I'll grant you that a Pro Bowl doesn't mean much, but being voted All-Pro certainly does. There's quite a high opinion of him around the league, not just on this board, and I can't recall him being anything but good to great in pass pro and run blocking over the last year. I'm by no means an expert on line play, but unless you just believe that LJP is very good in his own right, I'm a bit surprised to hear the assertion.

Unger has some weaknesses, such as maintaining leverage against beats NT or stalky power rushers with quicks but his intelligence setting protections and athleticism reaching the second level blocking LBs is pretty freakish.

Timing and getting the rest of the line in sync is more important than just overpowering everyone IMO.

This^^^^ Unger makes the whole line better. It's more than just being physical. He's a very smart dude with unuque ability. No Fluke that he was voted Al-pro.

And I suppose the folks that voted him All-pro have overrated him also? That's rich.
