Mariners have opened their wallets and people just want more.

If the Mariners are opening their wallets, they might as well do what it takes to get a complete playoff-contending roster.

No point to open up the wallet if the team still has major holes afterward.

Well it's pretty obvious they aren't nearly done and still have plenty of money and trade options. So yeah I expect more.

The Mariners are showing increased interest in free agent outfielder Melky Cabrera, Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports. Seattle is reportedly in the market for a right-handed bat, but GM Jack Zduriencik recently noted that a switch-hitter would hold particular appeal.

I could get on board with this if it keeps us from trading for Kemp.

Slot Melky in the #2 spot in the order and that lineup is looking pretty good.

Add Melky Cabrera and I'd be ecstatic. I still think Saunders would have made an excellent backup/4th outfielder/platoon bat, and depth will remain a problem, and Cabrera isn't a stellar fielder, but he's not a complete liability and is a solid, solid bat who is not that old. Please make it happen.

Get him and add DJ Peterson at 1st base and you have a nice line up there. :th2thumbs:

I dont see them spending the money to get a Cabrera, a good offseason already.
They have the money it's up to Melky at this point given we are in the best position to sign him.

Only if he's really ready. Zunino is still extremely young for a major league player and it shows, and I worry about what that does to a kid. I had similar concerns with Ackley - I can't prove that 'rushing' prospects actually makes them worse, but I tend to think it can destroy their plate discipline and mental approach if they have to try to adjust to a game they're not ready for yet.

I'd much rather wait until September and give DJP a call-up then than risk rushing him. We've had so many failed position player prospects already - I'd hate to risk adding another.

I'll tell you what though I'd rather have Cabrera + our young pitching, rather than Kemp - our young pitching. M's pitching is what makes them dangerous.

Me too.

And consider that without our young pitching, our pitching depth doesn't look all that great.

I think the "rushing" thing is often times over rated. Ken Griffey Jr. was 19 years old, Felix wasn't much older when they were brought up.

Talent usually rises to the top. Plus you are not expecting him to be a middle of the line up hitter right away as you put him towards the bottom of the lineup and let him benefit from a stacked line up in front of him.

I think you're underrating Jr and Felix to be honest.

Special players are ready out of the box. Others do need time to adjust their approach as the game gets more and more difficult (from level to level).

That said, i would like to DJP with the big club at some point in 2015

Well said, Sports Hernia. Couldn't have said this better. Kyle Seager was rushed into the majors...he seems to be doing fine. With Seager, Cano, and Cruz in the lineup the pressure is less on the youngers guys, like Zunino and Peterson, to be productive right away.

You could say that everybody is rushed to the majors, really. We all have our own definition of "rushed".

Comparing your average MLB prospect to two hall of famer's is a little unfair don't you think?

MOST prospects are not ready for the majors one year removed from high school or college, therefore it stands to reason that letting them improve their skills and craft in the minors will result in a more well rounded major leaguer when the prospect finally gets to the majors.........rather than having them learn on the job and developing bad habits as so many young players do in order to just survive to not get sent back down.

Guys like Edgar, Tino and Jay spent 5+ years in the minors working on their skills before getting called up. Now because GM's, coaches and players get fired and traded so quickly there's more pressure to win NOW, so we see guys like Ackley get called up maybe before they're ready due to desperation. It didn't used to be that way.
