Earl now has no back-up.

This is not good. I was quietly hoping Calvin Pryor might be a good investment at pick 32. Now I'd happily trade up for him.

Look for Shead to move there. He's considerably bigger than Earl, but is a former CB with speed to spare. They also signed Terrance Parks to a futures contract, and have the whole draft to go too.

Backups will come and go from this team. I liked Maragos. Great character guy. But the fact that he signed for so little tells me this wasn't about Chris, it was about the coaches belief in the guys on the roster.

Fair enough, but I thought Shead was an SS and Kam's back-up? That's how it played out last season, at least.

Also, forgive me if I remain unconvinced about Parks - cut twice from the same CFL team, and only one of those cuts being due to injury. That's more than a simple 'next man up' from Earl Thomas, standard playing time restrictions aside.
I think you're getting a wee bit too worked up over this. They'll fill the role. Maragos was nothing more than serviceable.

AAah, free agency, where so many fans think they know better than the front office of the Superbowl Champs. Awesome

Maragos was great as Earl's backup.

Remember he is the guy who made the critical stop at the goal line vs. the Rams in the Monday Night Game on 3rd down. The Seahawks stuffed them so bad on that play that the Rams felt they needed to pass on the final play.

He would often come in for our goal line packages. He was a great depth player that will need to be replaced.

Was that Maragos or Farwell who made the stop in the Rams game?

Pretty sure it was Farwell, but maybe I'm thinking of a different game?

Maragos was a solid utility knife, but he got 3 years, 4 million. Not a contract we couldn't have matched if we didn't think we had guys on the team who could fill that role.

It was Farwell. He's a backup LB and comes in on goal line plays.

Both guys are ST beasts, so I hope we can hold onto Heath now that Chris is gone.

Jeron Johnson can fill Maragos role. He was backing up Kam but I believe he can play both safety roles. Besides, Johnson > Maragos, IMO.

Lol you absolutely need to either sign/draft a replacement.

the thought of 3 safeties brings back memories of etric pruitt

Smart heads up signing by the Eagles. Enjoyed the work of Maragos along with his reliability and availability. A good value signing by the Eagles. Good hunting Chris. :th2thumbs:

You already have replacements on the roster. Deshawn Shead is more than able . . .

On a Pete Carroll coached Seahawks team, Etric Pruitt would have been far more prepared to step in and play the position. Pruitt's unpreparedness was more on Holmgren than it was on Pruitt, IMO.

Back on topic, I'll miss Maragos, he was always around the ball on ST. Good luck to him in Philly.

-snip-

Nice point. Seattle lost the 2005 Super Bowl in significant part due to depth issues, where Etric Pruitt, man-off-the-street, had to step in for an injured Marquand Manuel, who was the 2nd stringer (but a very good one) after starter Ken Hamlin got clocked in a stupid bar fight earlier in the season. As I understand it, Pruitt hadn't really even spent much time on the 'Hawks practice squad, and was a desperation grab. So yeah, it was partly front office, and partly coaching approach in having ready-to-step in 3rd stringers. Pete's program works very hard to have guys capable basically all the way to 3rd and even 4th string, with a pool of ready-to-plug-in "next man up" without such a huge dropoff. So if Etric Pruitt was in Pete & John's program, he would have 1) been the best available "man off the street" and 2) have had significant experience on the practice squad during the year where he understood the scheme, and had gotten the reps in practice. It wouldn't have been such a huge dropoff.

I'd laid that one at the doorstep of the front office, but yours is a nice reminder that the coaching approach was an important factor too. Holmgren probably needed to spend less energy complaining about injuries and more energy having prepared depth all up and down the roster. Makes me just appreciate the Pete and John approach all the more.

And I say the mention of Pruitt was very much on-topic, because Maragos is our ready-to-go depth guy in case of an injury in a critical position, i.e., Earl. It also says the staff thinks Shead (or Jeron) is close enough to Maragos, to go with him and whatever talent they can pick up in the draft. Congrats to Maragos and hope he gets on the field in a non-ST role more with Philly.

As I recall, we signed Etric Pruitt because he showed the raw potential to be a good player, and it was in the middle of the season, not a desperation move. 2006 was the year where we were signing guys off the street to play in a playoff game.

The TD Etric let get by is all on the coaching staff. They got outcoached. Before he went on the field they should have told him "Cowher is going to see a backup on the field and possibly go to his favorite trick play, the WR pass, so be ready for it. Don't let anyone get deep on you."
