the thought of 3 safeties brings back memories of etric pruitt
On a Pete Carroll coached Seahawks team, Etric Pruitt would have been far more prepared to step in and play the position. Pruitt's unpreparedness was more on Holmgren than it was on Pruitt, IMO.

Nice point. Seattle lost the 2005 Super Bowl in significant part due to depth issues, where Etric Pruitt, man-off-the-street, had to step in for an injured Marquand Manuel, who was the 2nd stringer (but a very good one) after starter Ken Hamlin got clocked in a stupid bar fight earlier in the season. As I understand it, Pruitt hadn't really even spent much time on the 'Hawks practice squad, and was a desperation grab. So yeah, it was partly front office, and partly coaching approach in having ready-to-step in 3rd stringers. Pete's program works very hard to have guys capable basically all the way to 3rd and even 4th string, with a pool of ready-to-plug-in "next man up" without such a huge dropoff. So if Etric Pruitt was in Pete & John's program, he would have 1) been the best available "man off the street" and 2) have had significant experience on the practice squad during the year where he understood the scheme, and had gotten the reps in practice. It wouldn't have been such a huge dropoff.
I'd laid that one at the doorstep of the front office, but yours is a nice reminder that the coaching approach was an important factor too. Holmgren probably needed to spend less energy complaining about injuries and more energy having prepared depth all up and down the roster. Makes me just appreciate the Pete and John approach all the more.
And I say the mention of Pruitt was very much on-topic, because Maragos is our ready-to-go depth guy in case of an injury in a critical position, i.e., Earl. It also says the staff thinks Shead (or Jeron) is close enough to Maragos, to go with him and whatever talent they can pick up in the draft. Congrats to Maragos and hope he gets on the field in a non-ST role more with Philly.
