Where I understand the cultural-climate desire/need to include the WNBA in the discussion, the generalized term, "Seattle has not won a championship since 1979" is a shortened version of the original claim. The original claim is generally phrased one of two ways. The full claim is, "among the 4 major sports, Seattle has not won a championship since 1979", or, "among the big 4, Seattle has not won a championship since 1979". Among all the major sports networks, the first part of the claim is assumed. If hypothetically, the WNBA were to surpass the NHL in U.S. popularity and revenues at some point, then the championships held by the Storm would be regularly included in the common narrative. I'll grant that there are probably some talking heads who leave out the Storm because women... but by-in-large, the common statement connecting Seattle sports championships in 1979 and 2014 isn't part of a greater conspiracy to exclude the fairer sex.

As a city, it is accurate to say that Seattle has won three professional sports franchise championships prior to winning the Super Bowl this year. However, if inclusion, gender equality, fairness, and political correctness are the major motivation behind the "but the Storm...!" narrative, then the individual world championships our natives have won in skiing, fast-track, swimming, UFC, etc. should be included as well.
