Technically, it isn't Sonics. Storm won a title just a few years ago, but apparently it's not considered as major one. Maybe it's just me but that kinda thinking and perception seems abit disrespectful. WNBA is still professional league, and all the time/work/effort Storm put in deserves abit respect.

I find the constant exclusion of the Dawgs unacceptable, if not offensive, as well. IF they were to consistently add the words "professional sports", I'm down with it...but they don't. Instead, I hear "Seattle has not had a championship team since 1979". Yes, I fully understand the Dub is Washington, not Seattle, but I don't give a sh*t. Still it pisses me off. YMMV.

Never really thought of that but you're right. It should be acknowledged as professional sports championship for Seattle regardless of where UW is located, and also NCAA Championship is major title. A championship is championship regardless of what league it was in. Don't understand why those in the media are picking and choosing when talking about championship history of Seattle sports team, and neglecting to mention or acknowledge Storm (because it's WNBA but is still a pro league) and UW (their reasoning will be it's university) championships. Very misleading as if they're trying to embarrass and belittle Seattle.

If this makes me sexist, so be it.. but no.. the Seattle Storm's title doesn't count as a major championship.. any more than the Tacoma Rainers winning the PCL or something along those lines.

I mean kudos to them for winning the championship, but that league has such a small following you can't group it with the likes of the NFL, MLB, NBA or NHL.

Totally get they're only acknowledging Championships from the big 4.

Tell me, why haven't they acknowledged Seattle Metropolitans winning Stanley Cup. First American team to win is certainly is worthy of mentioning.

1916 Seattle Metropolitans - first American team to win the Stanley Cup. There's still two Canadian teams that have yet to win it.

Yes. One of which, Vancouver - fans have rioted the last 2 times they got to the finals. I'm very glad to see Seattle were model citizens in celebrating winning the SB. Even when losing in 2005 SB, they had class and didn't resort to such behavior, despite the shady and one-sided officiating.

I could have sworn the Sounders have won a couple of Championships as well.

College football is still a "mythical" title until the playoffs start. Could you imagine the NFL just handing the VL trophy to the team the media likes the best every year? Denver or the whiners would have gotten it this year.

The Storm won titles in a league that has existed for 15 years that has never yet captured any type of market share and 5,000 fans showed up to celebrate. Congratulations to the Storm but it doesn't count.

The Huskies didn't have a national championship game to play. They just were like, ok, that's us as champions. Great feeling and something all of us huskies celebrate. But it wasn't an NBA championship, World Series or Super Bowl.

The 1917 Stanley Cup champions... I mean, it wasn't even the NHL. It was 1917, from a team that hasn't existed for 90 years and only was around for 10. You really think that counts?

Considering that UW really only represents the fanbase of a single university (and many people who live and work in Seattle did not attend the UW), it's not so crazy or offensive.

UW isn't a 'Seattle' team.

I grew up in a Husky household...

but come on... a National championship (a shared one by the way) in college is nothing close to a professional sports championship.

Are we going to start counting Tacoma Rainiers AAA titles and O'Dea HS State Football champships as well (wait, thats Bellevue)

Wow, man. Debbie Downer of the year. And that's saying something on .net.

Yeah, it kept crossing my mind everytime they said the Sonics 79 championship as the only other "major championship" repeatedly from everywhere in the media, even our own.

In my mind, I don't view the Storm like that either, but I keep thinking how it must irk those players and coaches, etc. They could atleast mention them. I also kept thinking of the hockey championship too, that one doesn't even seem like it exists in the media. I don't really see UW's national championship in the same way as a Professional League Championship, so that one didn't come to mind.

It is in reference to the "Big 4" NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB

Anything else is minor in comparison.

It doesn't lessen the Storm's accomplishment. I was there for the final game of the first championship in a half empty Key Arena. I had a great time and celebrated their achievements, but it just wasn't a celebration for the city. I don't think anyone on that team, the owners or coaches thought this would be received as a great championship for the city.

Seattle wins things all the time. Washington Stealth won the Major League Lacrosse championship in 2010, we had a flying disc club that won national championships... all of these teams at the top of their sports won major championships. These are not on the level of the Big 3 (and four if you have to count NHL).

Guess someone should have told Steve Raible at the ceremony yesterday since he mentioned the Storm.

Nothing wrong with mentioning the Storm's championships. We don't have to ignore, it's just a reality that it doesn't matter to the majority of Seattleites.
