Not sure why anyone is saying this is petty or brilliant. It’s certainly not petty because he’s just trying to get the most money for himself which pretty much every player and agent does. Secondly, brilliant would be some unbelievably smart financial move. This kind of math of fourth grader could figure out.

I would do exactly that. Can someone tell me why I shouldn't?

This is how I read it:

If Kupp signs a contract of $11 mil, Ram pays zero, Kupp will earn $11mil from the new team.
If Kupp signs a contract of $6mil, Ram pays zero, Kupp will earn $6mil from the new team.
Kupp signed a contract of $4.99mil, Ram pays $5mil, Kupp will earn $4.99mil from the new team + $5 mil from Rams.

Yes, I will do it.
The Rams GM and CEO have been in place for over a decade. They've been dealing with player contracts for a very, very, long time. Normally Rams contracts have offset language that allows the Rams to claw back money paid in excess of league minimum if the player signs elsewhere. This is standard NFL practice. The Rams agreed to a specific clause that would mean Kupp could keep his $5M guarantee if released. People should understand that the Rams and Kupp put the clause in there for that specific purpose. It's not an error and it's not Kupp being petty. No Rams fan thought the Rams were going to get the $5M back. It's always been about whether Kupp was worth another $15M to the Rams. The vast majority of Rams fans understood that he wasn't and that the Rams should move on. The Seahawks are fully guaranteeing him $17.5M for 2025. Maybe it works out for them.

Is it petty or just smart most likely by his agent? If he couldn't command at least 10M+. He knew he wanted 4.99M was his target.

I don't think this is the rams paying part of Kupp's salary with the hawks. Our comp to Kupp is separate..but the terms of the deal was was a win-win for us and CK:

1. Kupp didn't lose out on $$ from the Rams.
2. The rams cannot reclaim that $$ and use it for their gain.

Petty? No, just good business for us and Kupp.

Kupp sacrificed his body a lot for that team. He's only extracting his pound of flesh back from them.

I am sure the Seahawks offered him a certain value and the most of that was moved to later years so he could collect his value from the Rams as well. Not trolling, just maximizing his income.
