I don’t consider this petty at all. Good for him. The Rams gave him the contract and in the middle of their contract decided to release him. He should get what is guaranteed to him. I would have done the same if I were in his shoes.

This is how I read it:

If Kupp signs a contract of $11 mil, Ram pays zero, Kupp will earn $11mil from the new team.
If Kupp signs a contract of $6mil, Ram pays zero, Kupp will earn $6mil from the new team.
Kupp signed a contract of $4.99mil, Ram pays $5mil, Kupp will earn $4.99mil from the new team + $5 mil from Rams.
