Geno would be a massive upgrade to Williamson. If they're really serious about a playoff push this season (and acquiring Naylor indicates that they are), they really need better production at 3B.

This is common for guys on a 1 year deal. Even for good players.

The rationale is you get something for him now vs getting nothing and he signs elsewhere in a couple months.

Yeah. To add a decent player for a playoff push with *possibly* the inside track to resign him seems worth more than a couple of bags of chips. I don't know much about these things, but it sure seems like the M's scored big on this one.
