Popeye, the problem is that Aldon got that injury a couple games before Justin got injured, and was still performing well up until Justin left.

Yeah, he was first listed on the injury report as "probable" in Week 13 and Justin went out in Week 15.

I don't know how closely you followed the 9ers last year, but it wasn't really noticably effecting his play until after Week 15 (e.g. it was there, and everyone was talking about how much worse it was getting as it went along):

We’ve also seen how Aldon Smith plays without Justin. His last two regular season games are stunning in how ineffective he’s been. In fact, that’s the untold story of this week. Aldon is hurting too. He’s been limited in practice with a shoulder injury and in the last two games if appears as if he’s been avoiding contact.

Edit: and also a good summary of why you want to look at sacks + hits + hurries to get rid of some of the noise of sacks:

(and don't worry, not just being a homer, Aldon shouldn't have had NEARLY as many sacks as he did list year. :) )

I can't believe that I'm responding to a niner argument
I don't think there's anyone that believes Aldon Smith is a bad player. But we don't believe he's a 20 sack good player on his own (like JJ Watt is), but on par with say Bruce Irvin, who we certainly don't think is a poor player.

And I'm not sure I trust that PFF article since it has left Bruce Irvin out altogether (unless they're trying to say he got 8 sacks from a measly 9 QB pressures, since they've charted every DE and OLB with 10+ QB pressures)

If anyone in there right mind things Bruce should be mentioned in the same sentence as Aldon, should not be allowed to watch football games.

Yes, he benefits from Justin Smith. But it wasn't as bad as his stat line indicates. He was getting good pressure but just didn't close the deal and his injury probably led him being a tad slower. He is looking like a machine this year.

He was like top 5 in nfl network top 100 and is easily the best pass rusher in the division and probably the NFC. Irvin is over rated. 8 Sacks from a rookie is decent but Aldon had 14 his rookie year and 19.5 last year. Bruce can't hold Aldon's jock and most Seahawk fans who are not crazy should agree.

I guess Golden Tate is better than Calvin Johnson too.

LOL He got 14 sacks his rookie year to Bruce Irvin's 8. You sir are a Pete Carroll waterkooler drinker. How is the weather hanging from every Seahawks players nuts? And I really don't mean to troll writing this and don't mean any disrespect to people who aren't homers.

No one in their right mind thinks Irvin is comparable to Aldon. Irvin benefits from having Chris Clemons, Mebane, etc. It is normal to have a supporting cast.

Association does not equal causation. Just because Justin was out and Aldon didn't get sacks, doesn't mean Justin caused Aldon not to get sacks. You have to look at his injury, the opponents, basic situational luck. He could of possibly wore down as the season ended. It could be anything. But he still has accomplished more than pretty much any pass rusher has in his first two seasons.

Plus. I would say at least 10 of Aldon's sacks last season came from bull rushing the LT or immediately beating the LT off the snap. How is Justin helping Aldon in those situations??? Aldon is also good at setting the edge against the run and makes stops in the backfield. It's been we'll documented that Irvin needs to improve in that regard..

Anyways, regarding Bobby Wagner and ET, I think those guys are top 5 (top 5 might be genuous for Wagner) in their respected positions. Can't hait on them. Wagner would not start, however, on the 49ers.. I don't think any of the Seahawks front 7 would but that might have to do with the 3-4 4-3 differences

Sarlacc, the vast majority of the Niner Dum-azz fans on this site are here primarily to make sure nobody gets away with talking bad about their team. That shit keeps them awake at night.
