I go back to when he got into Cables doghouse, I don't think he ever got out and then getting nicked up didn't help, I think with Sweezy and Bowie and Bailey we have a matched skill set of guys that Cable and Pete think will exceed Moffit. After all Bowie was a starting LT after Okung left for the NFL and has that kind of ability.

We will see how the DT plays out, one thing John and Pete do is make decisions and move on, I don't think Moffit moves if his desire matches the rest of the group. Also comedians can many times be taken the wrong way, many will see them as not caring or goof offs versus hard workers also. That may not be the case but as a comedeian your timing has to be right, maybe Moffit also had bad timing as far as his cut up time as far as a coach or others thought.

Completely agree. Being a comedian is risky business when you are working with extremely serious, competitive individuals (Cable strikes me as a pretty serious dude).

Good luck with the Browns John. Although he may have been average and may not have made the final 53 this year, meaning it is pretty good that we got anything for him, but I thought he played some his best ball in the playoffs last year when we needed him too.

Anyone remember during his rookie season there was a player miked up against the Hawks and the mike caught the defense talking about 74. He's a plodder, they said.

And in the end, that is what he didn't have enough of. Effort was fine, technique not bad, but just plain not athletic enough and a bit slow.

I think it's pretty cool that we got something for him, moffit is not bad, just not cable's ideal second level blocker. Here's to another Chris Clemons, only in the Jason Jones role, sounds like he was burried under depth just like Clem was in Philly, 39% chance I say.

I liked the idea of Moffit when they drafted him, he was part of a very good offensive line in Wisconsin.
But he never seemed to really focus on what was important.
Being the class clown has its disadvantages, while you're thinking about the next joke or prank.
The other guy is thinking about football...And taking your job!
He'll do alright in Cleveland, they are hurting for Oline help.
He'll probably start!

Most of the talk in this thread has been heavily focused on John Moffitt (and for good reason, as he's a known quantity and a guy that I personally really liked) ... I'd like to take a look at the other side of the coin and see what it is that the Hawks believe they're getting here in Brian Sanford. I think that the natural assumption here is that Schneider basically just traded Moffitt for some spare shoulder pads and a case of jock itch cream. As we're learning from seeing virtually unheralded guys like Mayowa and Lotulelei, I wouldn't go assuming Schneider ought to be necessarily checking himself in to Western State Hospital here.

I posted what little tidbits on Sanford I could find at the time back on page 2. Here are a few more nuggets I was able to mine on him ...

While the starting linemen are Ahtyba Rubin, Desmond Bryant and Taylor, the Browns are pleased with Billy Winn, Ishmaa'ily Kitchen, John Hughes and Brian Sanford. They believe all four are talented enough to be rotated in games.

Brian Sanford lined up at three-technique, five-technique, and one-technique and showed off his athletic ability, a nice spin move, good leverage while bull rushing, and a high motor. Although he typically played too high and had his fair share of struggles against the run, he recorded a sack, a hit on the quarterback, and a quarterback hurry when rushing the passer. Sanford's sack came on what looked to be a stunt between he and Barkevious Mingo. On the stunt, Mingo brought the left tackle to the inside as Sanford performed a spin move to beat the left guard to the outside. Once Hughes forced the quarterback to step up in the pocket, Sanford flattened his path to the quarterback, closed in, and brought him down for the sack.

Intriguing ... but as always we're obviously going to have to see this guy on the field. Perhaps a poor man's Scruggs? If they were bound and determined to trade Moffitt, I'd personally rather have had a late round draft pick ... but then again let's see what we have after Preseason Game #4 before jumping to any hasty conclusions.

Not that it matters much now, but these were the thoughts when Moffitt (and Carpenter) were drafted:

The addition of Moffitt came one day after the team selected its right tackle of the future in Alabama’s James Carpenter with the No. 25 pick.

“We want to get some more athletes with some mass and power, and I think both guys bring an attitude that kind of fits what we’re looking for. They’re extremely competitive guys and guys who were both leaders on their teams, in particular John Moffitt. ”

Cable said that Moffitt will start at right guard, and if offseason workouts were to start today, the line would be Russell Okung at left tackle, an open spot at left guard, Max Unger at center, Moffitt at right guard and Carpenter at right tackle.

Asked how Moffitt fits in Seattle’s scheme, Schneider cut to the chase: “The guy’s just an ass-kicker.”

I hope Moffitt makes it into a Hard Knocks team at some point. He will be a national star after that. Much missed in Real Rob Report. In the field, I dont think I ever noticed him.. The new guy Sanford will have seriously tough time making it to 53. I'd guess they just wanted more competition to that spot.

He was traded because he wasn't good enough in the eyes of the FO. Nothing else.

I have a bit of a different take on this trade.

Moffit was on a very reasonable rookie contract and could have easily stuck with the team until a better trade could have been made.

They are sending him to a non zone blocking line with a good chance to start while they sort out their injuries. This is a fantastic chance for Moffit. Kind of reminds me of how they let Leon go early so he could catch on
