Ok that's just great news.... He may be tough enough to hang with the boom but the last thing I want to wake up and read is that a high dollar free agent acquisition is out for the season because he was mauled by a bear that he was attempting to choke out.
Funny you would mention that. I read that Jared Allen trained in Muay Thai and JuiJitsu.
Now I know bears don't practice escapes from a rear naked choke hold but like you I'm putting money on the bear.

And yea Chuck Norris doesn't wrestle bears. He rides them...like a hairy magic carpet.

This might seem a daft question but what does the term "locker room lawyer" actually mean?

I've heard it bandied around by people but I'm struggling with the context.

It may not be completely correct but it seems to me that it's a guy who isn't afraid to challenge higher powers when it comes to their dealings with players; acting with the playing staff's interests and letting them know what they are entitled to.

That's put rather clumsily but in summation he's a player's player. Some FOs are apparently weary of these types of guys, my guess is it's the worst ones so we shouldn't have anything to worry about.

It's a player that really knows and understands the NFLPA/NFL agreement. While players as a whole may know their individual player contract many players are not up to speed with the negotiated agreement between the NFLPA and the NFL. Most rely on their agents for that information.

or just thinks he knows and understands it better than other players.

Personally, I'm way more inclined to hope for a short term prove it deal from Melton. Allen is / was a great player but his best years are a few years behind him, and the last thing this team needs is a washed up pass rusher taking up cap. I smell Patrick Kerney all over him.

I'm out.

You see that's why I was struggling because that's what I suspected it meant but the negative connotation made me think it must be something different. A player who puts himself out for other players would be a good thing imho especially on a team like the Seahawks.

Kerney had like 14 sacks his first season with us. I would love a washed up Pass Rusher like that please.

I don't see how the Cowboys are in any position to sign FA's, they're cap situation is a disaster. So if they're the only other team in competition for Melton and/or Allen, we should at least get one of these guys.

They opened up quite a bit of space after cutting Ware.

The Cowboys have 7MM in space. They have made a few signings since ware. You need about 5MM for practice squad, injuries, and draft picks. They could still sign Melton or Allen, but they would be mortgaging future cap space greatly by doing so. For example. If you pay a guy 8 APY and you make the cap hi 1MM, then the next year it would be 15MM.. it's the reason why the Cowboys will never win a SB under Jerry Jones.

They opened up 7M, but they were only 1M under before that. So you're telling me that roughly 7-8M of cap space is enough to sign either Melton or Allen AND all their practice squad and draft picks?

Sorry, but after 5-6M for practice squad and draft picks, 2M isn't enough to sign my grandma. Thanks for playing Cowboys, better luck in 20 years when Jones dies and you can finally get your cap situation under control.

Kerney was 31 when we signed him to a 6 yr 40 million dollar deal, with 20 guaranteed. He had 14.5 sacks in yr one, then 5, then 5, then retired.
I agree that first year was great. I don't remember the figures, but I also remember being left in a cap hole, with a position to fill when the aging pass rusher retired.

I'm just saying that for the cost (10mil+ a season?) I would be weary of signing him when the alternative is perhaps spending a little more than half as much (or less) on a bargain rental and rolling any cap space we have into next season - to sign one of our 3 best players. Worst case scenario we roll with Bennett, Avril, Irvin and the other boys we have, plus maybe a pick. Even then, we'd be better off than most teams.

Depends how they structure the deal. Bennett will only have a cap hit of $4M this coming season. Percy Harvin's was only $4.9M last year. It's not inconceivable they could structure a deal for Melton with a $2M cap hit in year one.

I guess it could work, but why sign aging free agents when you're not in contention for a SB? If you lowball a first year contract, then you're basically saying "we can only afford you for one year cause we backloaded the contract to explode next year."

But then again, this is the Cowboys. This kind of thinking is why they have twice as much dead cap as everyone else..........sign players, then cut them and take on tons of dead cap. Smart Jerry!

Precisely. And, really, you think Jerry Jones is able to admit they are NOT contenders?
