Allen is / was a great player but his best years are a few years behind him, and the last thing this team needs is a washed up pass rusher taking up cap. I smell Patrick Kerney all over him.
I'm out.
Kerney had like 14 sacks his first season with us. I would love a washed up Pass Rusher like that please.
Kerney was 31 when we signed him to a 6 yr 40 million dollar deal, with 20 guaranteed. He had 14.5 sacks in yr one, then 5, then 5, then retired.
I agree that first year was great. I don't remember the figures, but I also remember being left in a cap hole, with a position to fill when the aging pass rusher retired.
I'm just saying that for the cost (10mil+ a season?) I would be weary of signing him when the alternative is perhaps spending a little more than half as much (or less) on a bargain rental and rolling any cap space we have into next season - to sign one of our 3 best players. Worst case scenario we roll with Bennett, Avril, Irvin and the other boys we have, plus maybe a pick. Even then, we'd be better off than most teams.
I can agree with that.
As far as Kerney leaving us in a hole when he retired I think it is based on how many years/guaranteed money/years left
If a player retires, the remaining signing bonus that has not been included in salary “accelerates” and is included in that year’s team salary. Thus, the team will take an immediate salary cap hit of the remaining signing bonus.
He played 3 years with 20 mill guaranteed. The remaining cap hit would would take effect on season after he retired.
20 / 3 = 6.66666
20 / 4 = 5
20 / 6 = 3.3
We would of taken a cap hit of 6mil at the most for 1 season. For some reason this more fun for me to do then actually look up what he was paid after he retired. Googling....($4,299,999) was the dead cap hit after looking it up.
For fair comparison we currently have 8.4 mil in dead cap money. So ya Kerney more than likely hampered us a bit with his retired cap hit as the cap was smaller also.
Fun side note. We had Flynn as dead cap of 4mil, and Red counts as 3mil, Rice 2.4, and Clem 2.1
So ya, the Kerney deal overall was horrid because he retired.
With Rice's Dead cap money any deal we re-sign him for would count just that much more.
