Is it a strategy?

That is what I am saying. Of course you are not going to play like shit, but you play conservative knowing your defense keeps you in the game (and perhaps to protect the qb if - and notice i said if, because i only watch from the outside - you feel he gets rattled. Then you study the tendency of the defense and you adjust and decide what will work best and pick the best strategy and then open up the book with the particular plays that will work best.
Now basically that is what happens in every game, but our defense allows us a little more leeway in being extremely conservative in the first half.
Of course i have no insight and therefore i am just guessing.
Seems pretty plausible to me

I know when I wrestled as a kid one thing I sucked at was known when I had the lead I didn’t need to score anymore and I remember losing a match cause I took a shot and got stopped and gave up points as time ran out and lost at the last second. So there is a time to not risk it. Sam plays better when he’s in the zone too so maybe conservative slow playing helps him warm up.
