I just don't get why anyone would blame Bevell for what was clearly the fault of execution of the play.
Clearly the fault of the execution of the play? Obviously since it resulted in an interception, play execution bears a major part of the blame for the disastrous results of that play.
The play call was a lot less clear and as a result, much more controversial. I personally didn't mind passing rather than running on 2nd down, but would have rather seen a fade to the corner or something other than a bang-bang play across the middle of a very congested field, perhaps one that would have given Russell an option to put the ball in a spot that only our guy could catch. A lot of bad things could have happened with a slant pass, particularly a batted pass that results in a jump ball. I also wouldn't have minded a running play and if we didn't score, either force New England to call one of their TO's, preserving our own, or call our last one with seconds remaining, forcing one last play for all the marbles on 3rd down. I did not accept the excuse that we wanted to be able to utilize all 4 downs.
That's just one take from a stupid couch potato, but it demonstrates how controversial and potentially divisive it could be if it wasn't handled well. I called for Bevell's dismissal simply for that one reason, ie an ill advised play call.
