Was a little surprised not to see this being discussed at all.

Irsay on releasing Manning:
“We’ve changed our model a little bit, because we wanted more than one of these,” Irsay said, referring to his Super Bowl XLI ring. “[Tom] Brady never had consistent numbers, but he has three of these. Pittsburgh had two, the Giants had two, Baltimore had two and we had one. That leaves you frustrated.

“You make the playoffs 11 times, and you’re out in the first round seven out of 11 times. You love to have the Star Wars numbers from Peyton and Marvin [Harrison] and Reggie [Wayne]. Mostly, you love this.”

Personally I think he's free to say what he likes but, wow... what an a-hole. Was he taken out of context or something?

Irsay continues to prove Kiper correct. Not many can do that.

Manning is above such nonsense, but for fun, he should leak to the media that Irsay's comments and lack of appreciation has made him decide to enter the hall as a Bronco.

Watch the fun as Colt fans revolt against Irsay immediately thereafter.

If we didn't have Super Bowl aspirations for the next 10 years, I'd hope Manning would get another ring, just to stick it to Irsay.

The fact he has to answer for moving on from Manning to Luck is real god damn stupid.

This, it would be the only consolation for us not winning it this year (as long as it wasn't against us). It seems ridiculous that man's only got one; especially when his Brother has two.

The only joy I could take out of another team winning it would be if they were beating the 9ers.

I don't see what the big deal is given it's the truth and in their position they had no way of knowing if Peyton would comeback to a decent level let alone the level he is playing at now. It's one of the reasons they are remaking the team into something nearer to the Ravens and others (power running with defense with a good not elite passing game would be the goal).

True or not, do you think he could have chosen his words a bit more carefully? Seems like he went out of his way to me.

I think Irsay was trying to say something like, "Hey, I love Peyton, but I wanted to win NOW and we needed money to get better at a bunch of positions and it was cheaper to draft Andrew Luck and pay him peanuts."

But Irsay is an idiot, so this is what came out.

I find it hard to believe these words are in complete context given the fact that Isray was quoted recently discussing at the owners meeting how he planned a big ceremony honoring Manning when he returns to play against the Colts, but who knows, anything is possible I suppose

NFL am on the NFLN just did a segment on this, Andy Lindahl from 850 KOA radio was the speaker via phone. I only heard bits and pieces so I won't try to quote anything. I'm sure it will be played again to day if anybody is interested.

I personally think the owner of a team has the right to say what he wants to say, but holy cow, Payton deserves more respect than that. As talked about in the NFLN segment, Payton basically built that stadium.

I think it's all about putting extra pressure on Manning for the up coming game.

Edit: yes they are planning a video tribute. Again could be added pressure/ distraction.

My comments meant if we gave Peyton better SP Teams n Def,we would have won more than 1 Sup/Bowl,instead of asking Peyton 2do too much

I really do think he meant that, as I said. I think he was trying to say that they didn't have the money to do that with Peyton eating so much cap, so they went with Luck.

OT, why don't more basketball teams trap/press, especially if your team is worse than the other team? Seems like letting a team that's better than you set up a conventional offense every time down the court is just letting them beat you.

AOT, George Karl is the best. THE BEST.

I heard it this morning I thought it was rude. However, he has somewhat of a point when he mentioned how many times bumped out of the playoffs early, including last season. He mentions stealers two rings one was given to them as a gift though.

I think you are correct. Seems like an excellent poker move to try and add some pressure on Manning.

Irsay is a full blown alcoholic, but he proves what I have been saying all along, Bill Polian was one of the worst GMs ever! But he benefitted from having Peyton Manning make him look good year after year. Manning got them to the playoffs year after year, but the team didn't have enough talent to win once they were there.

Not a real big fan of Schlereth but he did say "I always said Indy was a 4-12 team without Peyton, I obviously overestimated them."

Edit: If John Schneider doesn't win at least one GM of the Year, then the NFL really is a "Good Ol' Boy" institution.

Sure, but he is kind of an idiot in my opinion.

I'm not a big fan of Irsay or anything, but this is media-manipulated nonsense.

The quote came immediately after being asked about the Seahawks game, and he says that he now feels he has a team where special teams and defense can win him the game (e.g. blocked FG). Says he lost in the playoffs due to inconsistent special teams play and inconsistent defense. Says he doesn't want to be entirely reliant on an "incredible passing team." He was only making the point that he wanted a more well-rounded team (which he specifically says here).

Watch the video yourself (can skip to 1:00):

Edit: Just realized there were also a different set of quotes that the story is coming from. Still, it seems pretty clear what he meant if you watch the video above.

Thanks, that definitely makes more sense.

It's from a different conversation. Irsay is guilty of saying something stupid.

Let's recap:

Peyton Manning has career threatening neck injury.

Colts tank for Luck, successfully.

Manning has an enormous roster bonus due (around $50 million), and with his career status in doubt, it causes reasonable people to assume he is untradeable. Unfortunately for the Colts, the deadline to pay the roster bonus comes before the free agency / trade period begins.

The Colts release Manning. Though at the time it was thought he may never play another down, his free agent status causes the most frantic free agent frenzy in NFL history. Before he even signs, the Colts look dumb for releasing him because it turned out the interest in Manning was intense. Manning ends up in Denver on nearly an identical contract to the one Indy terminated. Even if Manning really did go on to never play another down, the Colts look like dummies.

Manning nearly wins MVP last year and is breaking records this year. Everything the Colts did was reasonable at the time they did it, but they still look pretty darn stupid in retrospect despite that. Thankfully Luck has been winning games, or else this would have been a nightmare for Irsay.

Irsay is not the brightest man to begin with, and he has reasons to be defensive about the Manning situation. The way it's unfolded looks bad for Irsay. In this case, his statement was meant to diminish what Peyton Manning was to cover his own butt for how bad the decision to release him looks in retrospect.

Now, there is a smart way to cover one's own butt and a dumb way. The smart way is to say that Manning is incredible, but that no one has a crystal ball and the decisions made at the time were all reasonable (which is 100% true). The stupid way is to diminish a QB who is not only perhaps the greatest QB of all time, but an icon in Indianapolis, all based on the small sample size theatre that is playoff football. It's stupid on multiple levels.
