I had a thought after watching the Bennett brothers on NFL am.

Michael Bennett used different players names specifically when doing a sales pitch on the show for Allen. He said like 5-6 players, and one of them was Irvin. There were other names that he didn't use in the Linebacker core and he was using who he considered outstanding d-linemen on a line that he jokingly talked about getting over 50 sacks with Allen here. Irvin was in that group. Maybe it's nothing, but that makes me feel that Carroll still has plans for Irvin as a pass rusher with the way he was on Bennett's list of names on the defense and that Bennett himself recognizes the skills/talents Irvin brings to the table.

I'm guessing Irvin will take over Schofield's role as a situational hybrid 3-4 OLB type. They might also use Irvin in the spinner package more.

i'm also wondering if they have had a longer range plan in place for Irvin as well. They put him out there at lb last year with the dl signings, but if they didn't think he had the talent to work out at lb, they never would have put him out there in that position. They already know that if they have other beasts the opposing o-linemen have to contend with getting to the quarterback that irvin can thrive in that role as well. His first year, they only had Clemons as really the only other consistent pass rusher across from Irvin. With the changes with the dline already this year, with or without Allen, they will probably lean on him more as a d-line player again. Even without Allen a pressure package with Avril, and Irvin on the outside edges and Mebane and Bennett on the inside should be a handful for most teams. Even if they keep him primarily at linebacker i still think he will make his way to the d-line rotation as well.
