Says the NBC announcer as Michael Dickson drop-kicks the kickoff stepping in for a roughed up Sea-Bass being attended to on the sidelines.
And it was a very good kickoff indeed!

...only with the Seahawks...what a blast that game was.

Yeah... His second one went out of bounds and put them at the 40, but that first one they blew their returner up.

Yep, drop-kicks and drop-bears! :)

Seriously, the dropkick hasn't been used in Aussie rules since the early 70s. It is also rare to see a torpedo punt (similar to an American football punt) these days; the drop punt is ubiquitous these days. It isn't kicked on the half-volley like a dropkick, it's simply "dropped" vertically onto the boot, point down, and the kick has a resultant natural backspin.

Almost positive it was indeed the 40.

From what I've read, when the kickoff goes out of bounds, the receiving team gets the ball 30 yards from the kickoff position, which is from the 30 yard line. So yes, the ball was spotted at the 40 yard line.

It's always the 40 when the ball goes out of bounds on a kickoff... That is a penalty which is placed at the 40, not a spot foul.

*edit* should add that isn't the case if it goes out of bounds earlier than the 40 yard line, like on a onside kick attempt going out of bounds.
