Being a rugby coach is something I enjoy and am proud of and there are a lot of similarities to football. Football has it's roots in rugby. The offensive vs defensive line is just an expanded scrum. The techniques for controlling the line of scrimmage are very similar to controlling and ultimately dominating a scrum. For our forwards we preach having a wide base, legs spread wide, ass up, back straight, and eyes on the the middle of the opponents chest, short, quick steps beat, long strides once engaged...etc...etc. All the basic tenants of good form for a lineman. And, certain body types- thick trunk, squat legs and wide shoulders- handle these challenges better than others. The biggest difference as far as football is concerned is a big forward for a rugby team doesn't need to have long arms...but strong hands are a must.
And to answer your question directly, no that doesn't make me some kind of NFL talent expert. Line play is just something that interests me.
