I just had a nice conversation with Jaguars coach Gus Bradley in the empty underbelly of the Jaguars’ stadium that I wanted to share. It is completely unrelated to the NFL Draft, which made it all the more refreshing. Here it is…
One day during Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman's rookie season in 2011, Bradley (then the defensive coordinator for the Seahawks) shared with him some advice. He saw potential in Sherman. He saw something special.
“If you want to be successful, you need to remember these three things,” Bradley told Sherman. “A commitment must be made. A plan must be laid. A price must be paid.”
Bradley then elaborated on each of those lines – which immediately became a mantra Sherman often recited back to Bradley during their two seasons together.
On Wednesday, Sherman signed a four-year contract worth 57.4 million, making him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. Shortly after the deal was done, he sent a text to Bradley. In all caps, he wrote these three words:
“ MADE… LAID… PAID.”
We often think the league's elite football players succeed based on nothing but athletic ability. But as is the case in many careers... a commitment must be made. A plan must be laid. And a price must be paid.
