Geno Thoughts

I'm still shocked over this trade. Mainly, because I can't believe he was traded for merely a 3rd rounder. That's it? Despite what many think, I found Geno to be a very decent QB. I won't get into the debate whether we could win a Super Bowl with him or not, I don't think there's any clear winner to that debate. However, stats don't lie and yes I get that stats don't always tell the complete tale (egregious turnovers in the red zone for instance), but this was a dude who tossed it for 4300 yards and 21 TDs, Pro Bowler...Hose for an arm, mostly very accurate...Not some bottom level scrub.

I am no Geno Fan Boy but I have eyeballs and enough football watching equity to know when I see a bust and when I see a decent player. I will never get the vitriol he got from some of you. I just won't. Hey, you know what they say about opinions, and we all got 'em, but the dichotomy between Geno being a quality QB and he's garbage, will never take you anywhere is frankly shocking to me.

Oh hell, I don't know. I suppose I could ramble on but at the end of the day he's been traded. For a song basically, which I just don't get. Seemed like a great team player and leader overall. Said all the right things, his teammates seemed to love him. But now he's a Raider and I'll be rooting for Pete and Geno in Silver and Black (don't lie, you will too)...

Call me crazy but I think a 3rd for Geno is pretty fair, especially when you consider Vegas is going to have to have to give him a new contract and we don't.

I'm with you Aros and will be cheering hard for the Raiders but plenty of Hawks fans wont be. For some reason a lot of our fans hate both Pete and Geno

It's been 16 seasons since we had to watch a truly bad team. A lot of people could be about to remember what it's like.

What I had a hard time with Geno was his lack of consistency. The up and down roller coaster made me queasy all game; every game.

Whether in a game or throughout the season, you never knew what Geno was going to show up that day. Complete crap the first half of a game, then turns into serviceable or clutch game winner in the second half. Or vice versa. It was always a roll of the dice.

This team won't be able to take the next step until things can be consistent from the QB. Maybe that is what DK meant when he said he wanted stability at QB and requested a trade.

I do think we should have gotten more (I mean, trade request happened on Thursday, he's gone by Friday?) but it's looking more and more like Geno just wanted his last big contract to be with Pete in Vegas.

As both a Seahawks fan and a fan of Geno, not the happiest news for me (I did declare the Raiders my 'AFC team' back when they moved to Vegas, maybe I'll actually start paying attention to them with Pete and Geno there) but I can't really fault him.

I mean, if I were in his shoes, I might do the same thing.

In the end, if we take this opportunity of moving on from Geno and Tyler (and probably DK... damn is this a depressing off-season) to really invest in the trenches--especially on offense--than he may be doing us a favor.

Best of luck to Geno in Vegas. I'll always appreciate opening week against Denver in 2022, the 3 straight bonkers games against Detroit, and the game where he finally got the Niners monkey off his back. I wish we could have seen what he could do here with a real O-Line but hopefully letting us get a real one for his replacement can be his legacy here.

I'm still ecstatic about the trade. He does have good physical tools, but I'm sorry something is just wrong with his "processor." I saw it way too many times last year to be comfortable with rolling him back as our starter for the fourth straight year. He was supposed to be a bridge quarterback right after Russ was traded. You don't stick with a "bridge" quarterback for four years. And now he's of the age where his physical tools could start to diminish and could rather quickly.

I blame fantasy football and the internet. Fans want instant karma and overnight fixing of things. Reality crops up every time.

Add in that there is no subtlety allowed on the internet. Someone says "he's pretty good" and the opposition goes off accusing the poster of calling him the GOAT or something. And it works both ways. Someone says "he's pretty good" and it's all "No! He sucks donkey dicks!"

It's like that meme that says "I can't log off now, somebody is wrong on the internet!" It's why this time of year is so hard to watch.

Honestly, there should be no looking back on and opining about his playing days here. He was a placeholder and that's it. Moving on should be quick. [IMO] If this trade bums you out, you missed the narrative when he was brought in.

I think the other scenario is we cut him. And a Third rounder is way better. No way were we giving him $45 million a year extension. Now we save $31.5 million and get a 3rd rounder. We have young talent that will need new contacts soon. Can't afford a high priced average qb. Might have to break a few eggs to make this omelet.

Geno was a nobody to me until he stepped in to backup Wilson at that Rams' game. I have been a fanboy since. I was the earliest advocator for starting Geno after Wilson was traded.

This is my take on Geno:

1. Is Geno elite?
   His plays in the last three years were above average, at times close enough to elite but never there. No, Geno has not been elite.
2. He was 'never' there due to the system?
   He had two subpar OCs;
3. Due to his abilities?
   Perhaps, as he has more bad games than the true elite-level QB. True elite QBs had bad games, just fewer of them.
4. Can Geno be elite?
   Yes, IMHO, he can play at the elite level under a better offense system and support, but still not consistently at the elite level.
5. Has he been on an upward projectiory since he started for the Hawks?
   No, he regressed some. Speaking as a fan boy, constant pressure gets to any QB, Don't believe me? Ask HOF Steve Young, when his all-pro OL aged, Young's play regress too, hearing footsteps. Mahome didn't look too hot under constant pressure. Why should Geno be different?
6. Could he bring a team to the promised land? Yes, absolutely. Just that he needs more help than some true elite QBs. For Geno, the play calling, the run support, even the defense, ALL need to be elite. In my mind, Geno of 2022 can win our 2013 SuperBowl, heck the 2014 too.

@Ozzy, here, my opinion on Geno and being elite. As all the geNOs may remember, old toffee has been advocating for Geno to find a new team, as he will never find success or love in Seattle.

I opened a bottle of bubbly once his trade news broke. Ole toffee was a happy boy that night, as I was honored that none other than Brady the GOAT agreed with me, or he wouldn't have signed off on trading for Geno. Pete Carroll does not have the final say in the Raiders hierarchy.

While I don’t agree with your Geno take I don’t think it’s unreasonable or crazy talk either.

Geno is entering his 12th year? To me he’s had 1 great half of football (first half of 2022), maybe 1 more year of pretty good football (second half 2022 and most of 2023) and 10+ years of can’t get on the field or bad football. His most recent season was objectively bad. He had 16/15 entering the last week of the season. Now we can dive up blame and surely a lot of it was tough for him like his line, OC etc but many guys have had worse situations and done better than a 1/1 clip. I can’t even approach the description of elite with a career like that. To me it’s almost insane we would even consider it. His rookie season where he won’t pay a teammate back who was a late round draft pick and ends up getting his nose busted. It’s weird. It’s a part of his story(and you can argue he grew up a ton too since then).

Physically he does flirt with elite. He makes throws most guys won’t even attempt, he’s ultra accurate, does have a certain it factor when he needs to etc. in short physical tools are close to elite and if he had better decision making he could’ve been elite.

But add that all up and he’s has at most 2 really good seasons of football out of 12. He’s entering his mid 30’s. He checks out during games and pouts on the sidelines at times. Brock last year in a close game noticed Geno sitting with his head down and Howell was walking up and down the sideline trying to get the players in the game and it bugged Brock a little. End of the world? No but still something to me.

Now I’ve been labeled a hater by Many Geno supporters but I’m not. His story is awesome, not many guys fail for 10 years before hitting it and to his credit he did. That means he continued to work his ass off waiting for his chance and he ran with it. He did what almost no team does, move on from a superstar which invokes a ton of pressure and does very well. It’s really incredible if you think about it. He was the perfect bridge to hopefully a long term answer that John has to now figure out. Let’s see if he does.

So to summarize Geno was an awesome redemption story, played well enough that some will argue he’s elite and looks to be finishing his career a success instead of a failure which is incredible. I also think it’s probably a good time for Seattle to move on. Win-win for everyone involved

And I appreciate the write up Toffee. You do a lot of trolling type posts(not in a bad way) so it’s cool to see a real post about Geno.
